Balancing parenthood w self care sounds interesting and id like to hear your thoughts!- from someone who is basically a parent to their baby sibling and feeling like losing themselves
Sounds like a complicated situation!
This is one of the less fully-formed thought processes I have going on right now, so this is a good excuse to start making my way further down this path of thought.
Personally, I’ve been coming to terms with how some of my past criticisms of my own parents may have often been a result of my parents finding compromises between their needs and mine, when I was a child—and I’m fully supportive of that kind of compromise, in theory, for the sake of the parents’ wellbeing—so long as such compromises are tactfully and delicately sought and enacted. But how that’s done, I don’t yet know.
Although I haven’t thought about it too specifically yet, I have a sense that some of those compromises from my childhood were better achieved than others, so I’m interested in analyzing the various levels of success in those compromises, if I can remember any specifics, and trying to decide whether or not I believe parents should always absorb the negative effects of any unbalanced compromises that may occur while parenting. I’m not a parent yet, but I’d like to be soon, so I need to not only determine my opinions but to hypothesize various circumstances and ask myself how I’d deal with them.
Being a parent to a sibling is an interesting angle on the concept that I’m in less of a position to have an informed opinion on... that sounds like it could become especially complicated when considering what levels of responsibility you can be expected to shoulder, as a sibling—all of which depends on a multitude of details in your specific circumstance that I’m obviously not aware of.
Something I do think applies to every parenting situation, and something I intend to factor very heavily into my own projections on this subject, is the concept of building a network of effective support—”back up parents”, so to speak. I’ve been thinking about this a lot and how I might try to intentionally develop a network of people who aren’t simply “my friends and family” but are specifically a subset of my friends and family whom I trust in parenting contexts and who, ideally, bring things into my child’s life that I am unable to. I want to intentionally develop the best multi-member family for my child that I can—something that becomes more and more important to me as I more heavily lean towards adopting as a single parent.
Wellll I guess that turned into a mini rant... consider it a “pre-rant”. I can’t be sure how relevant my thoughts about this will be to what you’re going through, but I wish you luck and this topic is one that interests me, so if you ever want to talk to me about specific stuff, privately or otherwise, feel free to send me a message!
6. A song that makes you want to dance?
XD I can’t bear to answer this with one song! I have a personal law that I must dance when I hear either of these songs:
Flashlight by ParliamentYou Rock My World by Michael Jackson
Other near-irresistible dancing songs include:Embody by SebastiAnHelix by Justice
ALSO nearly any song from this bhangra mix, OMG:

That drawing you just got from goomscarf is so nice!!! It reminds me of falling asleep listening to you read moomin!
That is simultaneously a sweet compliment to Chloey’s drawing and a very touching sentiment regarding my reading and oh... my heart is beating quite strongly; perhaps I shouldn’t have made my dinner so spicy; I feel so happy right now you guys I love everyone quite a lot and it’s a beautiful night...
Music Suggestions + Responses
I’ve received two song suggestions today following my request for them—thank you friends!! Here are my responses to the songs you sent, below! If anyone ever wants to send me more song suggestions, I’ll always be receptive to them, I loved this even with just two songs!
goomscarf suggested: River by Ibeyi [Link]
couldn’t listen all the way through | not my thing | it’s okay | kinda catchy | ok i really like this | downloading immediately | already in my library
River wasn’t a specific song I’m likely to listen to on a very regular basis, but I liked it and am interested in finding more like it! I especially liked the sounds of the instruments used, and the unique samply-moments, and the variety of overlaid rhythms. This is one of those songs that makes me want to listen to the other songs by the same artist—I have a feeling a real extra special somethin’ might be hiding in the rest of their discography! I like this genre but I think this song had a sort of... dryness to it that made me want a little extra.
c-g-ricks suggested: The Caves of Altamira by Steely Dan [Link]
couldn’t listen all the way through | not my thing | it’s okay | kinda catchy | ok i really like this | downloading immediately | already in my library
I’d heard the name Steely Dan and just assumed they were something modern-folk or shoe-gazey, like Iron and Wine for some reason? But this is like 70′s funk jazz rock stuff which is... A YES. I am definitely about to go listen to much more Steely Dan. Again, I get the feeling there’s probably something by them even better than this song out there for me, but this was a terrific gateway... it's like a better version of Doobie Brothers and sort of like a wilder version of my beloved Harry Nilsson! I am a TOTAL SUCKER for great horn sections like the one in this song, that was the real highlight, and there was even a moment when the horns sounded a LOT like something from Sean Lennon’s Into The Sun, which is one of my all time favourite albums. That was around... 2:42 to 2:47. Gave me feels.
Hi Caitlin, thank you for the superb makeup advice earlier (: It really helped me try new things! I was actually curious about highlighting. Would you recommend a cream or powder, and does it matter? Thank you!
no problem!!! i love to help :)
highlighters are my faaaaaaave right now and it’s nice that they’re also so trendy at the moment! i think the type of highlighter you use, as with all makeup, matters quite a bit!
i have pretty oily skin during the summer so i’ve been using becca’s pressed highlighters (i use moonstone as a highlight and i love mixing in opal as a warm blush!). if you have drier skin, i would recommend either a liquid or a cream instead as the powders can get patchy and cling to dry skin. i have the liquid version of becca’s ethereal highlighters but i feel it’s a little too much for my skin and makes me breakout a little if i use it too often :(
of course, i’m sure you’ve gathered that i am having a moment with the becca highlighters–and for good reason! they look beautiful and natural on my skin, even bare skin! the packaging is great and they stay all day! try them!! you can get a free deluxe sample of the liquid version in the color opal if you’re a beauty insider at sephora and make a $25 purchase! they used to have the powder and cream samples available too but it looks like those sold out quickly!!
