Goosegrass soup
Last autumn I dug out the brambles that were growing thick and wild under the hedges. Mum was hoping to reclaim some of the lawn, but for the most part it's now been taken over by goosegrass and feverfew. Goosegrass is edible and its best to pick it while it's young and fresh.
Here's what we picked today! It can be eaten raw but the plant is covered in bristles (which make it stick to everything - lots of people round here call it sticky weed) so it's more pleasant when cooked.
We made it into a soup with potatoes and onions and had it with mum's home baked bread. The goosegrass gave a very fresh and tangy flavour.
I love the spring time. I love the fresh green unfurling everywhere and the unexpected opportunities it brings. I love the untamable corners of our garden and all the wild things that grow. And I love to find new ways to engage with it all - to smell it and taste it and become part of it!
