Goddess Aphrodite
1st century C.E.
Gortyna, Crete
The city of Gortyna enjoyed prosperity throughout ancient times. However, following the Byzantine period in which it adopted Christianity, the city began to lose prosperity. The Arab conquest of Crete put a final end to the once great city of Gortyna, which was destroyed in 824 C.E.
This marble statue of Aphrodite was found in the ancient residence of the governor of Crete, in a rectangular open-air structure with conches on all sides, where statues of Nymphs were placed.
