Wren: Lei, get up, you’re being lazy.
Lei: Lazy is such a strong word, Wren. I like to call it ‘Selective Participation’.
Wren:
Wren: Idiot is such a weak word, I prefer to call it ‘Lei’.
Lei: Ugh, fine. I’ll get up!

I finished this last night and I'm still so incredibly broken. I'm trying to think of what I want to say about this absolutely incredible gutwrenching masterpiece and my mind is blank. Natasha Ngan broke me. I'm being 100% serious when I say have tissues ready because you are going to need them. So let's attempt to dive into this! This book picks up a little bit after the end of the first one. The Demon King has sequestered himself away from the court with only a select few allowed to be in his presence. Meanwhile, a healed up Lei and Wren are hiding out with some new allies waiting for the next phase of the big plan to reform the country. I loved the new characters! Bo and Nitta were amazing right away. I always love a good comedic character and Bo was just so much fun. Nitta was a nice steady presence to her boisterous brother. Also, I've always loved snow leopards, so the snow leopard demons were always going to be among my favorites. Hiro, another new character, is a shaman who was raised by Wren's family. He was a very quiet character that slowly grew on me as the book progressed. We also get to learn a lot more about Merrin, the Owl demon who rescued Lei and Wren at the end of the first book. He's a delightful grump and his banter with another character made me grin at my book like a crazy person.
When Wren's father shows up he tells them it's crucial they get allies in order to stand a chance against those still loyal to the court. So the crew sets out to win over three major demon clans that could be crucial to turning the tide of the upcoming war. I loved the journey across Ikhara, the world really felt expanded upon in this sequel. This book did an excellent job conveying Lei's PTSD surrounding her sexual assault. The ending of this book was incredibly upsetting, actually, most of the second half of the book was upsetting. My heart was ripped out of my chest so many times and just brutally stomped on. Even though this book isn't out for several more months, I need the third book in my hands now.
Y’all know Lei is really feeling it!!!
I do not like to wait 206 days for a new book. I do it anyway. I am c o u n t i n g the days. Hours. For Natasha Ngan’s new book.
