The pumpkin patch had been more of a grove, the aisles unseen as you walked. It was a hunt for the best pumpkin you could find, your eyes squinting from the bright light as the sun was setting. Stem over rotting stem, so many of the plants had gone untouched, the day before Halloween already getting the best of you. Your hand went flat over your face to divert the blinking sky, aligned with your brows as the biggest, greatest pumpkin in the field met your view.
Your smile wide, you clamoured around the extra pumpkins until your shin met the one in your mind. Almost the exact one you had hoped for, your hand reached down to graze across the orange vegetable. Your fingertips met the smooth texture, another hand coming into your view — but not your own.
“Great pick.” Smiled a tall man. His long, black hair blew in the wind, the texture rough. “Seems you got the best one in the patch just before the holiday.”
“Seems so.” You half-laughed with him, his bright, pearled smile making your knees weak.
“Jaebeom.” He smiled, holding out his hand. You hesitated, pressing his palm into yours with a light shake before you reeled back.
His hand glided over the vegetable, almost mimicking your own until his arms wrapped around it. The circumference seemed larger than he could manage, his arms tensing as he lifted the plant without even a grunt. Your eyes went wide, a proud smirk on his face as he nodded.
“I’ll walk you to the cover.” His chin pointed towards the checkout counter. The large, wooden cover above the space was hardly enough to even be considered a shack.
Your feet pattered over the dirt beside the man, the long path back up the hill to pay already tiring you.
“You know-” he began, a grin on his face. “They say these things ward off the undead.”
“I thought they were just meant for decoration. You know, All Hallows Eve?” You shivered from the wind, his eyes following your arms as they crossed over your chest. A concerned look grew on his face, your eyes blinking softly as you smiled to retract the movement.
“That’s what they want you to believe.” He snickered. “But their real purpose is to keep vampires out of your house. On Halloween, the supernatural gets a free ticket into any place they deem fun. This will protect you.”
His hands guided the pumpkin up higher, bouncing it in his grasp as you took in a sharp breath. Another laugh bubbled from his chest, his head shaking. “I got it, don’t worry.”
The orange sky above gave a strange glow to the patch, your eyes trailing over the man as he walked beside you. Torn jeans around his legs, flared sleeves of the flannel on his torso, long hair stringy but fluffy: he looked just as strange as the sun. Your eyes diverted from him in time to catch a small mark across his cheek, the number sign-like pattern making your feet grind into the dirt. Stumbling, Jaebeom halted his walking and set the pumpkin down on the ground. He reached for you in a second’s time, his cold hand on the bare skin of your arm startling as you hissed.
“You’re freezing!” You called towards him, his lips pressing into a thin line just before he smiled again. “It’s not even that cold out. Are you sick?”
“No-” he cackled. “No, not at all. I just run cold, I guess.”
You shook off the strange occurrence, watching Jaebeom lift your pumpkin back up and begin walking again. He slowed his pace, walking directly by your side in case you stumbled again. With a warming smile on his face - compared to his skin - the man seemed otherworldly. Your eyes trailed him as you made it under the wooden cover, the pumpkin sat at your feet.
“Need anything else?” he asked, a slightly-tired tone in his voice.
You shook your head, deeming his act of kindness already done. “No, I’m just going to be checking out now.”
He nodded, offering you his hand once more. You didn’t think twice this time, running the pads of your fingers across his as his thumb pressed into the back of your hand. Without shaking your hand, his own guided yours for the back to be facing upwards. His hold rose up, your eyes trailing his movements as his lips pressed a kiss into the back of your hand.
“Until next year.” he grinned, blinking slowly.
“Oh! You got one already.” A woman’s voice called from behind you. Spinning on your heels, you met her soft face, her form bending over to read the stamp on the pumpkin. “Good choice! You know, they say pumpkins ward off vampires.”
“So I’ve heard.” you said, smiling to your side as no one stood next to you. Your brows furrowed, spinning in a circle to find Jaebeom’s lengthy figure — but he was nowhere in sight.
“How in the world did you lug this thing up that hill?” she asked, giving you a confused look.
“Jaebeom helped me.” you said with a nod, her look turning more confused as you became concerned.
“Jaebeom?” she asked herself in a whisper, eyes darting around as if she was looking for someone.
Your money traveled into her hold, the cash taken and placed into the register. Her hand rose into the air, index finger pointing at one of the wheelbarrows. “Use that to get it to your car, dear!”
You nodded, lunging down to bring the pumpkin into the cart. Three simple tugs, and you had made it to your vehicle, hardly able to bring the vegetable out of the divot in the cart and into your car. Finally, with the pumpkin in your possession, you returned the wheelbarrow in time to hear a faint laugh.
No one in your sight, you shook it off, turning to head back to your car as a stick in the middle of the patch caught your sight. The scarecrow was stamped high in the sky to ward off crows, the familiar ripped jeans and flared sleeves flapping in the wind. You blinked, a rush of fear running through you as you surged yourself into your car, driving far from the patch.
back with another question for you to ponder over: what supernatural beings can you picture got7 as? e.g. jinyoung = vampire, etc, etc - knight of despair
This is interesting! To be honest, I'm not a big fan of supernatural stuff so I tend to avoid that genre in the books I read and shows I watch. (Except for the occasional horror story) This might not be too good or accurate but off the top of my head....
Mark: Vampire, 100%. (Have you seen how beautiful his teeth are?) He's ethereally handsome and seduces women into letting him inside their home so that he can drain them of their blood. Operates alone and doesn't like company. He'd fit right into Twilight-verse.
Jaebum: Werewolf, the Alpha male of the pack. He's a natural-born leader and defending his pack comes before anyone else. Terrifying and merciless with anyone who is a threat but is soft with the members of his own pack, particularly the females.
Jackson: Centaur. Magnificent, extremely intelligent and an awe-inspiring sight to see. A little wild and barbaric at times but extremely skilled at warfare. (Also, they never cover their upper bodies with clothes lmfao)
Jinyoung: A powerful Necromancer, extremely skilled in occult rituals. Manipulates supernatural forces in order to foretell events and gain all the hidden knowledge of the world. Has no qualms about using black magic and has a secret workshop where he enslaves the spirits of the dead to do his bidding.
Youngjae: A wood nymph or a fairy, a small and innocent creature who is rather ignorant of the problems of the world and simply loves to sing and dance in the forest. Sometimes shows himself to lost travellers to help them find their way out of the forest. Insists they listen to his singing.
Bambam: A magnificent Pegasus. A creature of beauty that causes everyone to marvel at him and loves showing off his beautiful mane and enormous wings. (Also has a constellation named after him) Unlike a unicorn, he is not an innocent creature but one trained for war.
Yugyeom: A giant. Lives in the mountains and isn't the brightest of creatures. He really only comes into the village because he's lonely and wants to make friends but all the humans are terrified of him. Extremely misunderstood, kind of clumsy.
(Somebody pls write werewolf Jaebum, that's a thing I need so badly to happen even though I'm not usually into this shit)
