What people think goths do on a Friday night: Drink blood mixed with vodka, snort coke, party in an drunk stupor at goth clubs for hours before finishing up the night with a human sacrifice and an orgy in a graveyard.

What we actually do: Wait for the newest episode of BuzzFeed Unsolved to be released , watch 80's horror films, trip over your black cat in the dark and fall asleep listening to Coven.

Goth Myths

So, as with a lot of things, goth (sub?) culture has a lot of stereotypes. I honestly don’t know why people stereotype, most often they aren’t true. Not all heavy metal musicians worship Satan, not all basic girls like Taylor Swift, whatever. Anyway, here’s some Goth stereotypes that are not true (at least, for most goths. ) If you fall into any of these stereotypes, please know that you’re still valid and I love you! 🩶

Goths always wear black. This is so not true. While a lot of goths with wear mostly or all black, doesn’t mean it’s the only thing they’ll wear. Pastel goth combines pastel colours with black and it’s still 100% valid as a form of goth. What matters is your beliefs and if you listen to the music because it’s a music based (sub?) culture.

Goths hate/want to kill everybody. This stereotype is so ridiculous. I’m sure some goths hate people. (Can you blame them? They get s3xu@liz3d a lot) and that’s okay. But that doesn’t mean everyone does. In fact, I find that goths are some of the sweetest people ever. Pretty much every goth I’ve ever talked to has been super nice. Sure, there are goths who aren’t, and insist on gatekeeping goth, but we just ignore them.

Goths are depressed/ su!c!d@l and s/h. Depression is common among the entire human race, and it’s sad. It’s okay if you’re depressed, it’s nothing to be ashamed of, it’s not something you can help. However, to immediately assume that someone is depressed based on their clothes is disrespectful. Or to assume they s/h and continue to pester them about it. Me, personally, I hate when people ask about my sc@rs or c*ts. It is a highly sensitive topic, so don’t joke about it or use it to annoy someone. Pretty much everyone suffers from depression nowadays and we all have to help each other out. Goths are just like anyone else. They have good days and bad days.

Goths think they’re vampires. No. Goths do typically (not always!) love vamps (as written by the likes of Bram Stoker, Ann Rice and Sheridan Le Fanu) but this doesn’t mean they think they’re actually vampires.. This stereotype is more an annoying than anything. There are goths who dress like vampires (Vampire goth) but it doesn’t mean they think they are vamps.And anyway, even if I do think I’m a vampire, what does it matter to you? It’s not like I’m chomping on your neck, so leave me alone.

All goths are white with black hair. No. Just no. Anybody can be goth. It doesn’t matter what your skin or hair colour is, how old you are, where you’re from, whatever. ***ANYONE CAN BE GOTH***

Blondes make awesome goths, and people of colour look gorgeous in goth clothes too. Why should certain people be excluded from a subculture they love because of how they look? As long as you listen to the music and have the beliefs, you’re not a poser.

Goth Stereotypes That Are WRONG

"All goth people are pagan/Wiccan/Satanists." - Actually, this is one of the biggest lies people buy into about goth people. Being goth doesn't have anything to do with religion. Being goth is about self-expression. I, for example, am a Christian, and before you get on my case, go look through a bible and tell me where it says that expressing oneself through style choices is wrong. Can't find that verse? Hint: it doesn't exist. "All goth people are dropouts/druggies/alcoholics/etc." - Once again, a lie. I am not addicted to alcohol or drugs, and I am a very good student and intend to go to college to get degrees in art and business, and I know others like me. "Goth people are all depressed/suicidal/homicidal/evil/etc." - Actually, no. One of the main reasons I am goth is because dressing this way and doing other things to express myself helps me to be happy. For many years I was struggling with suicidal depression because I was in an environment where I was unable to express myself. Now that I have been removed from that environment and am being allowed to express myself and be the person I want to be, I am very happy. "Younger goth people are only goth because they want attention." - Nope. As a matter of fact, I feel better staying as far out of the spotlight as possible. I hate being stared at or being the center of attention. If there's anyone else out there who hates goth stereotypes, feel free to comment. I understand your pain and frustration with the rest of the world.

When teenagers at the bus stop start chanting, "hey, where the rain go?" When you show up with your huge sun - blocking umbrella, which you need for your very real photosensitivity.

Sometimes, I feel like a terrible goth, Then sometimes I catch myself lying in bed, in a full length nightshirt, with old horror novels and opiates... (Prescribed painkillers, nothing more, but the point stands IMO).
