          Sarah had been keeping track of the days, but she hadn’t known that someone else was doing the same. It was only at that moment when she realized that Nick was right, it wasn’t too late! And with how downtrodden all of the adults had seemed lately, this was the perfect way to cheer them up! Maybe, just maybe, she would be able to see her dad smile for once. No matter how small a Christmas in this world might be, Sarah couldn’t help but allow the excitement to rush through her as she began talking a mile a minute, remembering what had been her favorite time of the year before. 

          “I found some decorations in the hall closet!” she rambled, her eyes bright and mirthful. “We can put them up and make the cabin look really cool and get everyone to help us! I think that would be a lot of fun. Maybe we can even find a Christmas tree! I think there were some ornaments in the box, too. And I still have my camera, so we can take a bunch of pictures! What do you think, Nick?”

“Right.” Ren nodded as she ran up the stairs. Hopefully the walkers wouldn’t catch them on the way there but at least Ren had a lot of arrows on her at the moment. “Come on! Hurry up!”

A disbelieving scoff immediately met Nick’s words, and Luke gestured towards him as though intending to administer an instant rebuttal–but it fell flat.

 If he was to actually preserve his current freedom and not end up grounded for a month under parental eyes so scrutinous he felt like Hannibal Lecter in lockdown, he needed to do everything necessary to avoid smashing a bottle of pop’s prize scotch. Again. Why the hell’d they even have a step-stool that flimsy, anyway?

“Come on, man. I only asked you, like, twice. You know my folks don’t keep the good stuff in the low cupboards any more. You tellin’ me it’s too big an effort to just– reach up there and grab somethin’?—- Hey, if we get caught I’ll say I made you, a’right?”

She let out a quiet gasp and, though she know she should be quiet, she couldn't just leave the other person like that. "Look out! Behind you!"

“Did you get much sleep last night?”

“Uh—no. Absolutely zilch.”

  There was nothing about his answering grin and the perky stroll to the kitchen cupboard that wasn’t a boast. Even his half-lidded eyes  practically exuded the essence of lazy satisfaction in the face, despite the shadows beneath them. Reaching up, he nabbed one of the two cereal boxes and shoved his hand inside. “Dude, next time you see Monique, you give her two kisses and a fuckin’ serenade from me. That girl, her friend, Katy? Oh man.”

   Before beginning his sentence, Luke’s hand promptly made a re-appearance with a fist-full of Frosted Flakes. He considered his haul for a moment, as though evaluating just how hungry he was, before proceeding to cram the whole lot into his mouth.   “Dibwn’ evwben schleep twgewbther or nwthin’.” he attempted to mumble through his newly created sugary gag.  He held up a finger, then swallowed painfully. “Girl’s so damn interestin’ she could talk an owl through daytime. Say I’m whistlin’ Dixie, man, but I think this could really turn into somethin’.”
