What cool ruins - with an impressive history! I had no idea that we would stumble across the ruins of St Mary’s Abbey in the museum gardens. The Abbey was first built in 1088 and it was one of the most powerful Benedictine monasteries in England. The Abbey was built by William the Conqueror after 1066 as a means of reinforcing his power over the North. Whilst Henry VIII banned all monasteries during his reformation of the Church and the Abbey fell out of use as a result. -RoxyB
This is the first ruined Abbey we’ve come across on our meanderings, and I found it rather captivating. Imagine pulling a magnificent building down because you have different outlook on religion, but believe in the same god. Couldn’t make this stuff up. Mental. -TommyC.
Opening hours: Anytime that the museum gardens are open (7.30am-8pm).
