Nice, so there IS some sort of clear standard based on science/biology to tell genders apart. Just tell us what it is, so people can never cheat the system.

How do leadership at the fair and Newsweek know people lied about their gender? It seems to be a lot of assumptions about individual’s gender. How do they know these individuals are “cis-men”, did they ask them? Is it possible that we have a similar issue in women’s sports?

 The fair promised next year to have “changes” and very swift “enforcement”, maybe next year the fair will be able to tell us “what is a women” and we can apply that world wide!

Given recent reverse discrimination cases, it could be that they felt entitled to not only enter but dominate that space."

how will you determine who qualifies as NB [nonbinary] and who doesn't? What specific characteristics will you use?

Next year, we will be much clearer about expectations and very swift in our enforcement.

Grace Hopper Celebration!

Okay ladies and gentlemen, we’re back and we’re still learning graphQL but we’re also at Grace Hopper so please forgive the tangent. There is such a staggering diversity of women here, it’s hard to believe that I encounter so few of them in my everyday life. Seeing them all here working on such amazing things, pointing out hypocrisies in workplace practices that I had started taking for granted, it’s like being back home when you didn’t even realize you had left. Probably in particular because, unsurprisingly, it reminds me of Wellesley. 

In one of my favorite sessions so far, Diane Boettcher, a Security & IT Executive at Microsoft, pointed out something I’ve thought myself on a few occasions but had not heard framed so neatly. We are often told that in order to be successful and respected in the workplace we should avoid certain words in our emails (don’t say ‘just’ or ‘sorry’), talk in a more commanding voice (no uptalk), and hide strong emotions -- in other words, we are told to act more like men. As Boettcher pointed out, this is a way to survive in the workplace, but to thrive requires a fundamental shift in workplace culture. It requires that these so-called ‘feminine’ traits be stripped of the stigma they carry.

Sure, no one should have to apologize if they’ve done nothing wrong, and some of these behaviors are not innate to women but ingrained at a young age by patriarchal social norms. But I know a lot of men who won’t apologize even when they have made a mistake -- and while acting like them might help you keep your place in the shortlist for promotions, I think we would all be better off we weren’t penalized in the first place for acknowledging our imperfections. It’s the only way to learn from our mistakes and it promotes a culture of honest communication in the workplace. It was refreshing and inspiring to hear a top exec point out the hypocrisy of advising women to act more masculine to be successful.

Since, got opportunity for GHC 2018. Before applying for GHC, I don't have any idea about myself whether I could be suitable person for them or not. STS Grace Hopper Celebration Competition

This is my entry for the Grace Grace Hopper Celebration!

Stage One:

This blog is the method I primarily use to show others my STS program experience and what I’ve been doing with my Sherpa, Neha. It details my meetings I have with her and my personal journey through the programme. When I first found out about it, I struggled to find other people’s experiences of it online and so I thought why not document my journey for others to see? This way I can let others know about this awesome opportunity and everything it entails and maybe even encourage other girls to sign up and begin their STS journey. From the first matching event- simply being in a room full of other girls and women who were studying or working in STEM fields just felt so incredibly empowering to me, especially because there are usually a lot more men at similar events, and I wanted to be able to pass on the opportunity for others to join this community.

I have told my friends and family about my meetups and directed them to this blog and I have obviously told Neha about this blog and she helped me check the posts over and also, more importantly, made sure we had great selfies for me to post on here! She told her fellow colleagues about this blog and in that way has helped me to get the word further out about the STS programme. When Neha arranged for me to attend a networking event, I also told people there about this programme that I’m doing.

I’m also a student ambassador at Aston University and sometimes helped out at events with younger students and whenever I had the chance to meet other girls interested in studying STEM subjects, I would talk to them about my STEM studies (or other people I knew depending on the subject), what I was learning about and what it’s like, in order to hopefully encourage them and inform them that while it is still a male dominated industry, that shouldn’t affect your decisions or worry you, especially if you have an interest in that subject.

In the future I’m also looking to promote STEM to girls further as I’m on the Aston Computer Science committee in the upcoming year as well as helping organise a local hackathon so I’d be helping to encourage other girls to get into coding.

Stage Two:

For this stage I have created a poster which I have attached to the submission form.

Stage Three:

a) It’s important because big companies have the resources and reach to help social enterprises, such as Stemettes, to promote and encourage women to join the STEM industry. Right now the STEM field is still very male dominated and that may intimidate girls, especially when it comes to attending conventions, talks and other STEM events. There are usually not that many women in attendance compared to men and I think by sending a group girls to a celebration of women in computing, it really shows other girls that it is normal and we are just as powerful.

b) My contribution would be conveying my experience to others who wouldn’t get the chance to experience the convention. As I said before in part one, when I was at the first matching event just knowing I was in a room full of women and girls in STEM fields felt so powerful, and to be able to be a part of something like that again on such a huge scale would be wonderful. Also, I’d like to think that being part of a celebration of that size would impact other girls and women in such a positive way and encourage them to join this STEM industry.

Another thing I can contribute to the celebration is being able to convey my experiences to others using social media and talking to other students, I think this blog is a great example of this. I created it to inform others of the STS experience and I’d love to keep that going and show how many opportunities you can get from this programme and also just to show that there are women and girls out there in STEM fields, even if you don’t see it daily. To be able to say that I’ve been to an event of this  in the USA is a great conversation starter to get people talking about studying and working in STEM fields.

c) One way to share my experience would be to use my personal social medias such as snapchat, which would be very useful for documenting my day daily to my network; facebook to post photos and written posts to keep a more permanent public record and to reach more people outside of my immediate network and Instagram to upload photos and videos. I would also share it on my blog here, sharing it with my friends, family and my sherpa Neha; I would also really like the idea of Stemettes promoting my blog link so that more people can read up about my experiences through here of the trip, but also of my time on the STS programme. I would also use my LinkedIn (www.linkedin.com/in/kelseychank/), which I have been working on improving with Neha during my time on the STS programme, so I would use that to show my professional growth, possibly through networking more or making my first post. In addition to these, I would also see this as a perfect opportunity to try out newer forms of social media and photo sharing such as Facebook Live or Boomerang and try to engage more people that way but also for me to learn new things in a new environment is a fun challenge for myself.

I would also be open to taking over the Stemettes snapchat or other social media accounts for a day to share our trip and encourage others to sign up to the STS scheme- during my time over the last academic year, as committee member of the UNICEF on campus at Aston society, I used the account to promote events before they happened and document the actual event, so I would enjoy doing that as another way of reaching our to more girls and showing how powerful women can be and our impact on this male dominated sector.
