Frustration, Love, and Logan: rambling thoughts on the newest Sides video
Thomas: You insulted us while venting...
Roman: Sorry--
Thomas: It’s okay, Princey. Honestly, it didn’t hurt me, it’s clear you’re the one that’s hurting.
This moment is so important, I think, to understanding both Roman and Logan and I admittedly don’t see many people talking about it in regards to them. There’s been a lot of discussion about Logan and his actions in particular, and while Thomas’s “it’s clear you’re the one that’s hurting” is directed at Roman, I think it speaks to Logan too.
Roman, at the present moment in the series, seems to have more self-awareness of his impact on others than Logan does, because Roman has finally stopped denying the pain he feels. Logan is... perhaps not entirely at that point yet. Logan did a lot of lashing out. He did it because he is scared, and lost, and he feels like nobody is really listening to him. I’m not saying that the ways that Logan lashed out is okay because he’s in pain, but I think it’s important to recognize that it is an explanation.
I also think Thomas and the rest of them know this. To be honest, I don’t really think any of them are mad at Logan because of what he’s done to them. I think they’re frustrated because they recognize that Logan is hurting, but when he won’t acknowledge that, it makes it hard to help him. I think this point is made clear in Thomas’s part of the argument with Logan:
“This just serves as a testament to the fact that you have a temperament, which is fine you just haven’t accepted it; if you’d let them finish, they’d get to the--”
I think Thomas’s frustration expressed here is born out of a concern for Logan. Thomas accepts him and his flaws (that’s one of the main messages of the whole video), but Logan doesn’t accept the flaws in himself. I think Thomas--and the rest of the Sides too--recognize how destructive that can be. Mentally, Logan is self-destructive in his denial of his emotions, and the suppression of them is leading him to be emotionally destructive to others.
I think it’s extremely important to recognize that Logan doesn’t mean to be hurting them. His reaction after throwing the paper at Roman as well as his “I didn’t realize” comments when Roman confesses how much he’s been struggling too point to that. I think the Sides and Thomas both know this. They are frustrated with him because they love and care for him, and they want him to love and care for all aspects of himself too.
Virgil knows what this is like intimately. I think that’s why he’s the first one to explicitly identify Logan as “lost”, and to reassure him that it’s okay. Sometimes when we are in pain, we push away the people we love and who love us. Even through their frustration with him, they never stop showing they love and care for him. They are still patient. They are still gentle.
If you’re frustrated with Logan because of any of this--the self-destruction, the lashing out, etc.--I think that’s okay. There are moments when I feel the same. But I don’t think that means he needs to be seen as a bully/villain/etc., unless we acknowledge additionally that (in the words of Roman from the first episode), he is his own villain first and foremost. We can love and accept Logan, choose to be patient and forgiving of him, and still have moments of frustration. These things are not mutually exclusive from one another.
nothing raises my spirits like listening to the Love, Simon soundtrack. It’s been a while. Although now I might do an impulse buy and download it on amazon because i really really want to watch it today
Personal and heartfelt thank you to anyone who has put out ace/Demi fics and/or headcanons for any of the Sides.
Helloooo everyone! Just when I thought I’d be able to be more active and work on fun stuff, ya girl here got sick. :P And I honestly don’t know at this point if I’m getting better or worse as the day drags on. So bear with me, please. May be even more delayed with getting stuff finished and out there for y’all. <3
I can’t exactly explain why, but I feel like I’ve got this huge pressure to get some decent writing (in terms of content and length) out ASAP. And I wonder if that’s part of why I’m struggling to write much of anything of substance. I feel like I’m struggling to tap into anything super concrete or of depth, and I wonder if it might be in part because I feel like I have to get some writing out like, yesterday.
I don’t even really know where this sense of urgency is coming from. Could be because I have irl deadlines (work ends on friday, I move on Sunday, I take a test in three weeks, I start training for a new job in one, etc.) But I’m starting to feel like some of my WIPs are suffering in all kinds of ways as a result of this gotta get writing out now mentality and I’m not really sure what to do about it??
