Jellybean Johnson, the drummer of The Time and music producer for artists like Janet Jackson, has died. He was 69.

Remembering Jellybean Johnson 1956-2025

Musician Jellybean Johnson has died at 69. He was a big part of the Minneapolis music scene, notably as the drummer and guitarist with The Time.

While singer Morris Day got most of the attention in the band, Johnson played on so many of their many hits like "Jungle Love", "The Bird" and "Jerk Out". I remember seeing their music videos on MTV and V66 as a kid. The group worked closely with Prince and while there was some reported tension at times, Johnson and The Time did appear in Prince's films Purple Rain and Graffiti Bridge. They had many pop culture moments including appearing as themselves in Kevin Smith's comedy Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, where Jay and Silent Bob join The Time onstage for a memorable scene!

In addition to The Time, he produced a number of songs for other artists including New Edition and Janet Jackson (he produced "Black Cat".
