色々と人気品種があるイングリッシュローズですが、代表する品種は「グラハムトーマス」と大半の方が答えるのではないでしょうか全世界で愛されていて、2008年には世界バラ会連合が選ぶ殿堂品種にもなっています。黄色系の品種は黒星病に弱く、秋にはボロボロになってしまう物が多い中で、37年前ではトップクラスに栽培がしやすかったのも世界に普及した理由でしょう。また現在でも、美しさとたくましさをこれほど兼ね備えた黄色系の品種はありません。
咲き始めはオレンジ色を含んだカップ咲きで、開花と共にオレンジ色が抜け山吹色を含んだ黄色になります。爽やかなティー香があり、花色にぴったりです。濃い緑色の葉も、花色を非常に引き立てます。花弁数は多いとは言えませんが、開いてからも五角形を重ねた様な花形で美しい形を維持します。
この品種の交配は特殊で「アイスバーグ」を使用しています。アイスバーグも花弁数は多くありませんが、非常に美しい花形を維持します。花形以外ではトゲや枝の硬さに「アイスバーグ」の面影を感じます。花首が短いのでどんな構造物にも合わせやすく、スペースに余裕がある方は自然樹形で楽しむのも良いでしょう。
黒星病への耐性は中程度ですが、樹勢が強いので成木になってからは薬剤散布の量を減らしても大丈夫です。秋の花は少ないですが、成木になるとポツポツと返り咲きます。交配親としてはあまり優秀ではないみたいで、黄色の後継品種は「シャルロット オースチン」や「モリニュー」しか生まれていません。どちらも美しいバラですが個人的にはグラハムトーマスを超えたとは思っていません。黄色系のイングリッシュローズの中では、個人的には未だに最高品種だと思っています。

An illustration of why I still struggle to figure out the best time to prune rose bushes back, BTW. They never go completely dormant.
Essentially living in a wet refrigerator will get you looking a little mangy, but every once in a while you can still throw out a bloom!
I was pretty impressed the first time I visited the area, in December, and spotted a nearly bald rose bush sporting a single bloom which looked fake from a distance. But yeah, this does seem to be a normal state of affairs in this weird climate.
Bonus geranium!
That's not what the blooms usually look like, but it's trying! 🥶
(Also living in a sheltered spot near the house. None of the ones more out in the open have been trying to flower.)
I also got a few cut flowers out of that job, whether I had intended to or not!
(Not about to go through that brush pile after more of the buds right now; these few just jumped out at me while I was working.)
That one bloom that had already opened is small and lighter colored than usual, but the smell is fantastic.
