My students: "Why does Russian have FIVE words for "same" and why do they all hate me personally?"
okay but seriously though. You know that feeling when you're learning a language and you think you've got a simple word figured out and then BAM the language is like "actually we have seventeen different versions of this and you will use the wrong one every single time"?
That's Russian learners with Russian words for "same".
But .. same? It's such a basic concept??? Russian said, "hold my vodka" and gave us одинаковый, такой же, тот же самый, один и тот же, AND один.
Each one fits specific contexts, and if you pick wrong you sound like google translate having an existential crisis.
i wrote a whole blog post breaking down when to use which one.
Anyway if you're learning Russian or just love linguistic rabbit holes, check it out. There's even a dystopian example paragraph that uses all five words because apparently that's what my brain does for fun now.
