I think I saw a Risso’s!

[Versione italiana più in basso] The twelfth week of Ischia Dolphin Project led to a very special meeting: here what Margherita Silvestri - an assistant on board for ODO - has to tell us! "I was on board the Jean Gab two years ago, as a volunteer: this time I came as an assistant, and the experience was deeper: I began to really live and breathe the life on board in all its aspects! I saw the passion, the enthusiasm and the wit of beautiful people who chose to devote themselves to the sea and the cetaceans.”

The first real day on the sea was Tuesday because Monday is the embarking day and after welcoming the volunteers we all relaxed doing sauna and diving at Bagnitielli (Ischia). We had so much fun! As soon as we went out to the sea, we had the most extraordinary sighting: Risso's dolphins  (Grampus griseus) ! It was a huge emotion to recognize the black saber on the horizon! We clearly were on a lucky wave, because on the next day these rare animals decided to swim near the Jean Gab and we observed them again. On Wednesday, dead calm and some striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba), and we had a beautiful evening with music and a Mexican dinner. On Thursday, unforgettable stop by Ventotene, where we headed after looking for sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus). We had a fresh bath in the blue and we went happily to sleep. We left on Saturday morning and sighted three groups of striped dolphins. We had a very hot day with no wind, but the enthusiasm never left us and we ended the day with a French quiche prepared by one of the volunteers. I will never forget these days!"

La dodicesima settimana di Ischia Dolphin Project (la prima di agosto) ce la racconta Margherita Silvestri, assistente ODO a bordo di Jean Gab per il mese più caldo dell’anno! 

“Avevo già partecipato come volontaria 2 anni fa, portando con me un bellissimo ricordo, ma questa settimana da assistente mi ha permesso di iniziare a vivere e respirare appieno la vita su Jean Gab. Ho visto la passione, l’entusiasmo e l’ingegno di bellissime persone che hanno scelto di dedicarsi con la mente e con il cuore al mare e ai cetacei. La prima vera giornata di mare è stata martedì, perché il lunedì è giorno di imbarco e, dopo aver dato il benvenuto ai volontari, ci siamo rilassati tra sauna e tuffi a Bagnitielli. Ci siamo divertiti tantissimo!

Il primo giorno, battesimo del fuoco: grampi (Grampus griseus)! Che emozione riconoscere l’inconfondibile sciabola nera all’orizzonte, non c’erano dubbi: erano davvero grampi! Per continuare a cavalcare quest’onda fortunata, il giorno dopo questi stupendi e rari animali hanno nuovamente deciso di nuotare con Jean Gab. Mercoledi  calma piatta e qualche stenella striata (Stenella coeruleoalba) in lontananza, poi abbiamo ravvivato la serata con musica e cena messicana. Indimenticabile la tappa a Ventotene di giovedi. La giornata era iniziata alla ricerca di capodogli (Physeter macrocephalus) che - ahimè - non si sono fatti sentire né vedere. Così, carichi di provviste, ci siamo diretti verso isola, dove abbiamo dormito dopo aver goduto di un refrigerante bagno nel blu. Cosa chiedere di meglio? Siamo ripartiti sabato mattina e abbiamo avvistato 3 gruppi di stenelle. Nonostante il caldo e la totale assenza di vento, l’entusiasmo non si è sicuramente smorzato e siamo tornati sabato a Casamicciola,  concludendo la serata in stile francese con una buonissima quiche cucinata da una volontaria. Non scorderò mai queste giornate!”
