So there’s a bunch of people in alien-wear playing with a baby. Then everything goes apeshit and there’s guns and everything goes green-light explody.
Then Superman wakes up in a crap hole. Then the cops show up in the crap hole and start moving his crap around and Clark Superman looks like a total dick. Then this old lady gives him his super cape.
Superclark is hanging out with Jimmy Olsen watching TV and Lois Lane shows up.
Superclark is then walking around.
Then there’s a cat in a tree and a kid in the street and a van is about to hit her but Superman stiff-arms the truck and freaks the kid right the hell out. Then somebody throws a brick at Superman. Nobody likes Superman.
Then Superclark and Lois are at a construction site.
Next, a man is in a metal suit and there’s tubes all in him. The tubes are injected with green and the guy goes crazy pants and stands up.
A crowd of people carrying anti-E.T. and anti-Superman statements are surrounding the Man of T-shirt Steel and apparently want their money back.
The art is very good with the exception of people’s faces. At times figures and jaws distort way out of shape that takes me out of the story and the flow of the narrative. While the nature of art and images of this kind is to tell a story and evoke emotion, that story and emotion should not be “where’s that man’s teeth if that’s what his jaw is doing?” unless the story is about a bunch of jelly jawed people.
The story is pretty much with exception that the images do not add that all the green in the issue is Braniac. One could argue that a huge clue to this are the differing in lettering in Braniac’s text bubbles, but when I do the first pass I ignore all speech and text so I ignore this one.
This issue is an okay retelling of Krypton’s explosion and Braniac’s arrival, but I feel as though I have learned nothing about any character in this issue. Nothing goes forward, just reestablishes what regular comic readers already know and bores the pants of anyone who has never picked up an issue. In one of the most purchased comic titles in history at a time when the entire line is being rebooted, the writers and editors cannot let an issue like this go by. It is weak and boring.
