The History of International Graphic Design Competitions in Iran and the Emergence of a New Chapter
Over the past decades, Iranian graphic design has maintained a visible and active presence on the international stage. Much of this visibility was shaped through competitive exhibitions that introduced Iranian designers to a global audience.
The Beginning of an International Movement
In the late 1980s, Iran entered a significant phase of global engagement in graphic design with the launch of the Tehran International Poster Biennial.
Organized with the support of institutions such as the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, and in collaboration with the Iranian Graphic Designers Society (IGDS), the biennial quickly became one of the most important design platforms in the region.
A central figure in shaping this movement was Morteza Momayez, whose influence played a key role in establishing the foundations of modern graphic design in Iran.
Professional Structure and Global Participation
Over the course of nearly two decades, the Tehran Poster Biennial was held for a total of 10 editions, attracting designers from across the world.
For example, in its 10th edition (2009):
Countries such as Japan, China, Poland, Germany, Finland, Croatia, Taiwan, and Iran were among those represented, reflecting the truly international scope of the event.

The Discontinuation
Despite its success, the biennial was discontinued after its 10th edition in 2009. Following a shift in institutional direction, the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art ceased hosting competitive exhibitions, effectively bringing the biennial to an end.
Since then, no sustained international competitive platform in graphic design has taken place within Iran.
A Significant Gap
For more than a decade, despite the continued global presence of Iranian designers, the absence of an independent international competition has been strongly felt.
This gap exists at a time when both local and diaspora Iranian designers remain highly active and influential worldwide.
A New Independent Initiative: VOIA 2026
In response to this absence, VOIA 2026 – Voices of Iran Design Award has been established.
This initiative represents the first serious effort to create an independent international design competition organized by an Iranian network outside of Iran, aiming to connect designers inside Iran, the diaspora, and the global design community.
Hosting the exhibition in Los Angeles — home to one of the largest Iranian communities outside Iran — positions the event within a truly global cultural context.
A New Generation Continuing the Path
In this context, Pouya Golestaneh, as the founder of the initiative, is working to build an independent platform for the international presence of Iranian graphic design, drawing on over two decades of experience with IGDN.
This effort can be seen as a contemporary continuation of a path shaped by pioneers like Morteza Momayez — with a key distinction: it operates independently from governmental structures and is rooted in a global, diaspora-driven perspective.
A Beginning, Not a Claim
VOIA 2026 is not the first international design event in Iran’s history. Rather, it represents one of the most important independent efforts in recent years to redefine Iran’s presence in the global design landscape.
If successfully realized, it can lay the foundation for a sustainable and recognized platform in the years to come.
Voices of Iran Design & Exhibition Awards 2026 (VOIA)
(VOIA) is a global visual arts initiative created to amplify voices through design.
This is not just a competition. It is a movement.
A platform where artists translate reality into visual language, challenge perspectives, and create meaningful impact through their work.
At a time when many voices remain unheard, VOIDA creates space for expression, visibility, and global connection.
Organizer:
Created & Directed by Pouya Golestaneh ( Founder of IGDN)
This initiative is organized by the Iranian Graphic Designers Network (IGDN), founded in 2000 in Tehran, one of the first independent design networks of its kind, dedicated to supporting designers and expanding visual culture internationally.
Content Guidelines:
Submitted works should focus on human, social, and conceptual experiences, and avoid direct political or ideological statements. Any use of images, symbols, or direct references to political figures, governmental entities, or political events is not permitted and will result in disqualification. Explicit depictions of violence, conflict, or shocking imagery are discouraged and may negatively affect the evaluation process. Participants are encouraged to communicate their ideas through creative, metaphorical, and indirect visual language. The primary focus of the works should be on human narratives, lived conditions, and shared experiences, rather than promotional messages or direct positioning.
Main Themes
1. Internet Shutdown
Living in moments when connection is completely cut off. Experiencing digital silence, isolation, and a world that suddenly becomes inaccessible.
2. Life Under Pressure and Suspension
Living under increasing economic and everyday pressures while the future remains uncertain and suspended. Continuing forward within instability.
3. Collective Exhaustion and Continuation
A shared state of mental and emotional fatigue, combined with the ongoing effort to move forward. A balance between exhaustion and resilience.
Global Open Call:
Artists around the world are invited to participate in this international open call.
We welcome powerful visual works that reflect contemporary perspectives through creativity, courage, and originality.
This platform encourages bold ideas, honest expression, and artistic freedom.

Selection & Awards:
Three main awards will be presented:
🥇 First Prize — $2000 🥈 Second Prize — $1500 🥉 Third Prize — $1000
Selected and awarded artists will receive:
• Official signed certificate • Custom-designed award trophy • Exhibition in Los Angeles, USA • Publication in the printed exhibition catalog • International media coverage • Personalized QR code on the award linking to the artist’s profile

• Each participant may submit a maximum of 3 artworks • Artwork size must be A3 format • Resolution must be 300 DPI • File format for online submission: JPG, JPEG
Max upload Size: 10MB

All entries must be submitted through the official website upload system and will be displayed in the online gallery.
Participants are also required to send a high-resolution print-ready version via email: [email protected]
The print version must match the submitted artwork and meet professional quality standards.
Rules & Eligibility:
Participation is open to all visual artists worldwide.
• All works must be original • AI-assisted works are allowed if directed by the artist • Works must not violate copyright or intellectual property rights • Previously published works are accepted if full rights belong to the artist
By submitting their work, participants grant IGDN the right to:
• Exhibit the works in physical and digital formats • Publish them in the official catalog • Use them for promotional purposes with proper credit
All jury decisions are final.

جوایز طراحی و نمایشگاه «صدای ایران» ۲۰۲۶ یک پروژه جهانی در حوزه هنرهای تجسمی است که با هدف شنیده شدن صداها از طریق طراحی شکل گرفته.
این فقط یک مسابقه نیست، یک حرکت است.
جایی که هنرمندها واقعیت را به زبان تصویر تبدیل میکنند، نگاهها را به چالش میکشند و با کارشان اثر میگذارند. در دنیایی که خیلی از صداها شنیده نمیشوند، VOIA فضایی ایجاد میکند برای دیده شدن، بیان آزاد و ارتباط با جهان.

برگزارکننده این رویداد، شبکه طراحان گرافیک ایران (IGDN) است؛
شبکهای که سال 2000 در تهران شکل گرفت و از اولین پلتفرمهای مستقل طراحی بود که روی حمایت از طراحان و گسترش فرهنگ بصری در سطح بینالمللی تمرکز دارد. این پروژه توسط پویا گلستانه (بنیانگذار IGDN) طراحی و هدایت شده.
راهنمای آثار:
آثار باید روی تجربههای انسانی، اجتماعی و مفهومی تمرکز داشته باشند.
بیان مستقیم سیاسی یا ایدئولوژیک پذیرفته نیست.
استفاده از تصاویر یا ارجاع مستقیم به شخصیتهای سیاسی، نهادهای دولتی یا اتفاقات سیاسی باعث حذف اثر میشود.
نمایش صریح خشونت یا تصاویر شوکهکننده هم توصیه نمیشود و میتواند روی داوری اثر منفی بگذارد.
بهتر است ایدهها به شکل خلاقانه، استعاری و غیرمستقیم بیان شوند.
تمرکز اصلی باید روی روایتهای انسانی و تجربههای مشترک باشد، نه پیامهای تبلیغاتی یا موضعگیری مستقیم.

نمایشگاه اصلی در لسآنجلس برگزار میشود. شبکه طراحان گرافیک ایران در حال برنامهریزی است تا این نمایشگاه به کشورهای دیگر مثل کانادا، انگلستان، فرانسه و ایتالیا هم گسترش پیدا کند. در صورت گسترش به کشورهای دیگر، اطلاعرسانی میشود.
