In the Prime games I didn't like that the grapple beam came out of Samus' other arm, but drawing it now it makes sense - and lets me fire her arm cannon at the same time!

is both the left-hand-grapple beam and the arm cannon grapple beam canon?

The left-handed grapple beam is only seen in the three Prime games, while the arm cannon grapple beam is used in Super Metroid, Other M, and Samus Returns. I guess that means both are canon, just different. Maybe post-Prime trilogy Samus modified her arm cannon for grapple beam compatibility? When you’re swinging through the air, it’s probably more convenient to keep your free hand spare rather than your clunky gun, so you can pull yourself up onto ledges afterwards.

Samus actually still had the Grapple Beam upgrade in Metroid: Fusion the entire time, but had no idea because the Fusion Suit was so unfamiliar to her. The spikes on the arm of the suit aren’t just meant for self-defense - if she forms her hand into the shape that activates the grapple beam, all three of them shoot out, attached to her gauntlet by cords of energy. Their magnetic capabilities means they can easily dig attach to any grapple beam-compatible blocks, and their razor-sharp design means they can even dig into just about anything else.

Unfortunately, she only found this out after the mission was completed, and spent an hour thinking of every situation it could have saved her from on the B.S.L. station. And punching things. A lot.

Super Metroid - Grapple Beam by dhkite

Super Metroid inspired me to start drawing out this idea two years ago. I had just aqcuired the grapple beam and man is that thing tough to use! (Glad I got screw attack later!)

This drawing shows the struggle of the grapple beam over a nice hot pool of lava in the Norfair.
