Brain was poking at the magic system for Grave Gold and trying to find something that feels appropriate for my oldest universe that is the most magical that fits with my animist apatheist scientist type world view.

So maxims about magic in the Grave Gold setting:

Magic is a bunch of bullshit.

The decision to evoke magic is a decision to manipulate or undermine the natural order to achieve a goal.

One cannot evoke magic without sufficient confidence.

Magic is shaped by belief.

What is the strength of Mankind's belief compared to that of every beast, bird, bush, and small invisible thing that lives upon the world?

In matters of contradicting beliefs, the side with more conviction and numbers wins.

All these statements are true and do not contradict: X god created the sun. Y goddess created the sun. Z deity is the sun. The sun is a giant ball of burning gas very far away older than all known gods and peoples.

Magic is aware and has its own opinions.

Magic is the flow of power generated by movement and the processes of life. Where there is more life, there is more magic. Where there is more motion, there is more magic.

Things that are dead are not alive and therefore cannot be killed.

The inanimate set in motion requires a source of power to stay in motion.

A good necromancer can manipulate formerly living, or rather, currently dead things. An amazing necromancer can manipulate anything that isn't alive.

There is a very big difference between dead things and things that arent alive.

Dead vampires cannot be killed because they are dead and not alive. They can be prevented from doing shit by various methods. Burying them facing the earth or upside down and piling rocks in top the grave. Dismemberment and scattering the bits so they cant come back together. Staking them into the earth.

The closest ya can get to killing a vampire would be things like: Burning to ash and throwing the ashes in a river to disperse and make it hard for the vampire to come back together or having it be eaten and digested by another magical creature. Both break down the vampires' body so much it can take centuries for them to pull themselves back together.

It's possible that a skilled necromancer can deanimate a dead vampire with enough prep time. But technically that's not killing it, it's as dead as it was before it got deanimated.

A necromancer will fight over the semantics of what counts as alive and what counts as dead and hold a very strong grudge with the person who came up with the term 'undead'. As most 'undead' things are just dead things that are animate or really really weird living things that are just really hard to kill.

Living vampires spread disease in much the same way normal parasites do. They feed off an infected being, pick shit up, and spread it to a new host when they bite someone else. Living vampires also spread venereal diseases in the usual manner that such illnesses are spread.

As magical creatures, vampires consume lifeforce to sustain the magic in their bodies.

Primarily this occurs via drinking fluids from living beings. Typically either biting prey and drinking blood or tearing the breath from the prey's lungs. Both can be fatal to the prey.

Milk is also a fluid regularly in vampire diets. Fresh milk is also a valuable source of lifeforce energy. Especially the fresher it is.

Vampires can also consume the flesh of living prey for sustenance. Regularly consuming flesh tends to lead to weight gain in vampires as meat is more calorie dense than blood and breath.

While vampires primarily feed from fauna, they are more than capable of feeding from flora tho many vampires comment that plant-based lifeforce is less nutritious than animal-based lifeforce to them.

Coconut milk and flesh, fruit juices, nectar, and raw fruit are consumed by vampires who either do not wish to prey on animals.

Due to it being completely unnecessary with easy to find alternatives, vampires that feed on humans are typically targeted by monster hunters.
