My gray mare has gotten better with age. She’s always been kind, and tolerated me back when I had zero patience. She had every right to buck my ass off on multiple occasions when I got her as 90 ride 5 year old. That was almost 13 years ago and since then she’s blessed us with five colts (she’s got another on the way) and has helped a few people find their confidence on the back of a horse. Today, I broke out my favorite gray mare, Sonora-Nora (registered as Streakin Iron — she’s also Hawk’s mama), to gather the herd so we could ship our steer calves. Tomorrow they sell and we will celebrate a year of work well-done. For most ranchers that are cow-calf operations such as ours there’s only one payday each year — the day your calves sell. Once in a while are able to sell some hay which is like a bonus check! And of course we finish out and sell some beef. This time of year money can be tight as you’ve got grass leases, feed bills, bankers and vet bills to pay. But the stress of figuring out how to make the cash flow and do it all over again the next year is worth it when you stand next to the calves — that were so tiny when they came into the world in April, May and June — and see how well they’ve grown and know that they’ve helped to make the ground better for the next set of calves because without proper management you don’t have grass. Ranching is not for the faint of heart. It’s a gamble. It’s work. And I’m so glad we choose to it. I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
