OH WELL
It’s summer, and Joe’s feeling pretty fucking good.
August is sweet and dozing in Pennsport - heat stretching out over porches like a tom cat, air just humid enough that Joe’s sweating slightly under the leather of his jacket. The sun’s out and warm, there’s a breeze sifting through the trees, and he’s got plans to take Loretta out with the boys.
The streets aren’t busy as he makes the walk over to where she’s parked, most folks staying in and away from the heat of the afternoon. There’s some college boy stood at the curb, leather reading satchel slung over his shoulder, book in one hand. He’s dressed in slacks and a blue cardigan that looks like something Bill's ma would wear to church on Sundays, sleeves rolled up to his elbows.
Joe shakes his head in pitying disgust, and turns up the collar of his jacket.
Cardigans. Honestly.
He makes his way over to his car, and he’s got the keys out of his pocket when -
Oh.
Oh, no.
'No,' Joe mutters in disbelief, 'Fuck, no, c'mon, give me a break.”
He runs his fingers despairingly over the slashes in Loretta’s tires. Her beautiful, beautiful, expensive tires. The key lines gauged into her beautiful, beautiful, expensive paintwork.
I’m gonna find who did this to you, he thinks, and I’m gonna kick the ass of that twisted sonofabitch so hard that they taste my boot in their -
There’s a cough from behind him, and suddenly, Joe remembers.
College Boy.
Fucking College Boy.
Of course.
'You,' Joe growls, whirling around and advancing on him, 'Did you do this?'
College Boy looks up from his book, eyebrows raised.
'Do what?'
'The car, genius, did you touch my car?'
'Why would I want to touch your car?' College Boy says. He sounds bemused rather than intimidated. Somehow that annoys Joe even more.
'I don't know,' Joe snaps, 'Why do you think I'm asking-'
He pauses, and looks at College Boy suspiciously.
'What's that supposed to mean?'
College Boy shrugs. Joe resists the urge to punch him, and instead asks:
'You got a problem with my car?'
'Not exactly,' College Boy answers, 'I just think it's ugly as sin.'
And he’s smirking, too - this asshole is honest to god smirking at Joe, with his fucking blue cardigan and his fucking loafers and his neat fucking hair and this, Joe decides, is it, this is the final fucking line and College Boy’s smirk has just crossed it.
'You just don't appreciate her,' Joe drawls back at him, 'because a guy like you who dresses himself in fuckin' sweater vests can't be expected to have taste.'
And that, that gets him the reaction he wants, because College Boy’s angry now, shoving his book in his bag and stalking towards Joe.
'This is vintage, idiot,' he says angrily, gesturing to his fuck ugly sweater, and Joe sneers at him.
'Yeah?' he shoots back, 'So's my car, poindexter, so how about you -'
'Hey, Web!'
Joe turns his head.
'Skinny?'
Skinny Sisk.
Skinny fucking Sisk is walking up the lot.
Skinny Sisk is coming up to them.
Skinny Sisk is going over to College Boy and -
Shaking his hand?
Joe gapes.
'Skinny,' he manages to say, 'Skinny, you know this guy?'
Skinny frowns, confused.
'Web and I have classes together,' he explains, 'I didn't know you two hung out, though.'
'We don't,' Joe says, at the same time as College Boy - Webster - does. He shoots him a glare, and Webster gives him one in return.
'Trust me,' Webster says drily, 'We're not pals.'
Joe snorts at that - because pals, really, are they twelve now, and Skinny’s looking at Webster and asking, ‘You ready to head off?’ and Webster’s nodding, readjusting the satchel on his shoulder.
'See you around, Joe,' he says, smirking with that goddamn mouth of his, and Joe has a retort, really, he does, but by the time he's ready to say it, Webster and Skinny are already walking.
'Asshole,' Joe shouts after him instead, and he hears Web's laugh from half a street away.
"You’re hurting me!"
"Well if you'd stop moving, I could maybe get this gum out faster!" Ariel replied, glaring at John as he continued squirming. "I think I might need scissors."
