Young Kudu Stud Strikes a Pose at Moremi Game Reserve, Botswana by from #wildographer @orkun.adalilar during a Merumisi Safari trip. ・・・ #Wildography #AfricanSafaris #WildographyandSafaris #merubisisafaris #greaterkudu #africananimals #botswana #moremigamereserve #africa #wildplanet #saveplanet #wildanimals #safari #wildlifephotography #wildlifephotographer #wildlifeonearth https://www.instagram.com/p/B8xHstSAGhX/?igshid=xant69ci3fb9
Greater Kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros) females and their offspring live in small groups of 6 to 10. Pregnant females will depart from the group to give birth, leaving the newborn lying out for 4 or 5 weeks, one of the longest periods of all the antelopes. The calf then begins to accompany its mother for short periods of time and by 3 or 4 months is with her constantly. Soon after, the mother and calf rejoin the female's group. Calves grow rapidly and at 6 months are fairly independent of their mothers. Around 2 years of age males wander off, joining up with other young males to form bachelor herds. Full-grown males prefer a more solitary lifestyle.
The Greater Kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros) lives in the drier areas of eastern and southern Africa, wherever there is adequate low- and medium-level woody growth to provide food and shelter. They are browsers and eat leaves and shoots from a variety of plants, some of which are poisonous to other antelopes. The males are the only sex to grow horns and they can become massive, growing as much as 72 inches! Males are also the only ones who grow long tufts of fur down their necks, sort of like beards. As you can tell from this photo, their coloration serves as excellent camouflage and if spotted, will often stand still making them difficult to spot by predators. Species Status: Least Concern
As insane as I am, I do enjoy vintage taxidermy. This is a #GreaterKudu , an antílope. (at Ditmas Park, Brooklyn) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVROMPSsa2h-trnPPCHVaV0Qo9YVbX2A8EYYYY0/?utm_medium=tumblr
With only 118,000 kudus remaining in the wild, kudus have a ‘near threatened conservation status’ according the African Wildlife Foundation. Hunters shoot them for their hides and/or meat and their horns are a much wanted collectors item. Local people use their horns in rituals, to store honey or to make instruments out of them. Habitat loss is another threat to the kudu population. Awareness and responsible travel is key to preserve the kudu population. 📸@odinomartinWith only 118,000 kudus remaining in the wild, kudus have a ‘near threatened conservation status’ according the African Wildlife Foundation.
