canyou explain the appeal of roy mustang to me in the most autistic terms possible so i can understand. i know he goes blind that's awesome i know about the envy stuff i just really need to understand why this guy is everybody's cursed amulet from this show
Oh god. Okay so, in the best ways I can put it: He changed my brain a lot when I was like 12 watching FMA for the first time.
But like,,, I think the main appeal for the wider fandom is his relationship with Riza Hawkeye and their shared guilt about the Ishvalan Civil War. Also he's like a flirty loser guy and that's a really popular trope. (He canonically only owns a mattress in his apartment, I don't remember what interview this was stated in, but he lives with JUST a mattress.)
I am also heavily invested in his guilt from the Ishvalan Civil war, I like that he joins the military because he wants to help his country, he wants to protect people. Only to be sent out to kill the people he's supposed to be protecting, that's really,, really fun for me. ALSO, he dragged Riza into the military. Their relationship before Roy was in the Military wasn't ever really shown in Brotherhood (it's been awhile since I watched 2003 so I cannot in good faith talk about 2003 Roy and Riza), she joined the military because of him.
He got his (not) girlfriend to commit war crimes with him!!! With the alchemy her father literally forced onto Riza, I would talk about the whole burning her back thing—but I genuinely can't without rolling on the ground and tweaking.
Also the fact that he's pretty much got a suicide pact with Riza is insane. Like if Riza ever dies Roy would probably commit guys. (Same goes for Riza)
He's just very, very cool too. But I hate him too. I need bad things to happen to him. 👍

ON A SOMEWHAT RELATED NOTE: Scar should be more popular here I think, because like,,, he's so fucking cool and like cycle of revenge story, , cycle of revenge guys... I love the cycle I love it guys guys guys. Like I'll try not to yap about Scar for now, but his plotline is so peak in every version Scar oh my god. Scarrrrrr I lov Scar.
