Fiona Apple - On The Bound
Echoes of Paul Bley ...
... in the opening section of this performance by Misha Mengelberg, the Dutch pianist who passed away earlier this year (2017).
Mengelberg - son of conductor Karel Mengelberg, great-nephew of the even more famous conductor Willem Mengelberg - laced his performances with wit and reckless improvisations, all embedded in flawless musicianship.
Here is the Misha Mengelberg Trio with a track from their 1997 album No Idea (DIW-5006). It's a somewhat idiosyncratic version of Gene de Paul's classic You Don't Know What Love is, written in 1941, originally for the Abbot & Costello movie Keep 'Em Flying (in which in the end the tune did not feature).
Misha Mengelberg, piano Greg Cohen, bass Joey Baron, drums
