Song Sung Blue (dir. Craig Brewer).
Based on Greg Kohs' 2008 documentary of the same name, Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson star as the real-life Milwaukee singing duo, Mike and Claire Sardina, from the popular Neil Diamond tribute act, Lightning & Thunder. It has all the enjoyable hallmarks of the musical biopic without the usual baggage of having to rehash a famous singer's origins. Framed as a bittersweet human interest love story, the amusing singing performance sequences are particularly charming. However, when things take a more dramatic turn, and the music stops, the family drama lags despite it mirroring the ups and downs of their actual showbiz-adjacent lives in the mid-'90s Midwest. It's also easily one of the most "generously" cast biographical films in a long time.
