Jumanji was released in theaters on 15 December 1995.

Chris Van Allsburg initially adapted his own 1981 picture book into a screenplay, which he says almost caused the studio to abandon the project. TriStar pictures agreed to move forward, only if Robin Williams starred. Williams declined, based on the script, and after Joe Johnston, Jonathan Hensleigh, Jim Strain, and Greg Taylor significantly provided rewrites, Williams accepted.

Jumanji received mixed reviews, but was a huge commercial success and spawned 2 sequels, a spin-off film, and a TV series.
