i think part of the reason why matt and frank are such a compelling pairing to me is because they're so complex and they're truly the only people that could come close to understanding each other

like they both are driven by a sense of honor and have a strong moral compass, but they try to disguise their vulnerability from each other (and the world) and fail because they can see right thru it

ex. in born again 1x4 frank knows it's all about foggy even if matt can't say it

and he comforts him the only way he knows how: by letting him express his pain as violence of which frank is the willing recipient

one of the main reasons i hate derek and owen so much is that they freely and without repercussions criticize their respective partners, often unprofessionally and unnecessarily, as well as in a way thats out of line-- but the moment christina or meredith turn around to return the favor theyre seen as overreacting OR owen/derek lashes out or otherwise has a meltdown over it

it really does NOT help that both derek and owen are attendings and several levels of the pecking order above these women and it exacerbates the power imbalance that the men try to force

i feel like matt tries so hard to be collected (he's a lawyer, kinda what he does) and pretend everything is fine and he's fine and he's lying about it and that's why it hits so hard when frank calls him guilty and tells matt that hitting him is "the first honest thing he's done"
