had an epiphany yesterday abt what I could call my Qunari Thorne: Grim!
because it's both a descriptive name (aka being 'grim') and a name that I could hc being of Ander origin ('grimo' being Old High German for 'mask'). Since some Vashoth are given / take on a descriptive name, similar to any 'role' they might fulfill as a person in the Qun, this way BOTH sides of his heritage would be accounted for :)
(also 'Thorne' as a surname reminds me a lot of Sleeping Beauty, bc of its German title 'Dornröschen' aka thorne-rose, which reminds of the Brothers Grimm, who y'know. compiled many german folktales, with Sleeping Beauty among them. fun trivia)
I was so attached to my Tal-Vashoth Grey Warden idea that I was devastated when I found out a Qunari Thorne can only be Vashoth & didn't wanna make them at all for a while, BUT.
I just had THE idea: what if, instead of exploring the theme of switching ideologies (Qun => Grey Wardens), I explored what growing up in Anderfels culture is like? We don't have a lot of info, but we do know that it's 1) entangled with the Blight & Grey Wardens 2) a land of extremes (in weather & people) 3) devout Andrastian, and 4) people are more defined by their ability than their wealth or status.
There's even a Qunari colony in the Anderfels - Qundalon - where Rook's parent(s) could have originally been from! If their parent(s) are still very attached to their cultural identity despite becoming Tal-Vashoth, it'd make sense that they'd stay in a similar area.
This'd make this Rook a great mirror to Taash! They grew up multicultural like them - and aren't certain how to combine their Qunari roots with their Ander upbringing. (Though I won't make the shit writing decision to force them to "choose" one culture over the other. They'll honor both, as best as they can).
I actually even once had the idea for an Adaar's parents to be a Saarebas (or Tamassran) that fled from the Qun, who then met & fell in love with a chantry sister (or very faithful member of nobility). I could repurpose this for my Thorne - and it's actually much more fitting here! (it would also explain the "Thorne" surname - Rook took on their human mother's name to better fit into Ander society).
There's also an in-game quest gathering a bit of info about the first Qunari Warden, and I think that would make my Thorne very emotional.
I've heard that there sadly aren't many Qunari- centric responses you can give, but you know what? For this character concept that even would be fine, considering their Ander & Grey Warden identity will likely take center stage for most in-game matters.
Being an Ander would also inform a lot about their personality - I was planning on making them more stoic / rough than my other Rooks, and growing up in a blighted land constantly under threat by the Darkspawn would explain that A LOT. (and why they themselves would become a Grey Warden later). Growing up with the heroic Warden tales since childhood is also bound to be make them one hell of a self-sacrificial hero...
