My beast is an elusive, solitary creature that lives high up in the jagged mountains and surrounding snowy forests that encapsulate a small town in the valley below.

The myth is that it is an immortal, legendary creature that strikes fear in the hearts of the people who live below it, walking and camouflaging in the snow and ice and snapping up children who misbehave as well as those who stray too far from the village. The science is that it belongs to a species of shapeshifters, an apex predator who can take on the form of other creatures in its habitat to integrate, mate and hunt, as well as being a big fluffy cutie-pie in its original form. (And if it does eat the occasional person that's neither here nor there, they were the ones that walked into beast's territory, after all).

Its place in our story, in short, is that it has been Dejan's (Rex's terrible terrible scientist <3) long-standing mission to study this beast, to understand it. The legends have slowly been acknowledged - throughout the years and the development of human knowledge - to be most likely over-exaggerated, built on fear due to lack of understanding, and Dejan wants to be the one to finally crack what exactly this beast is, to see what really makes it tick. To study it, he employs the help of Cole (pictured in the first image) our resident monster wrangler, and these two bring it into captivity. During its time in captivity, Cole is very much mistreated alongside beast, causing them to form quite a close bond as they both suffer at the hand of our lovely freak scientist.

I love my beast dearly, there are a lot of themes we tackle in the story surrounding the projection of human morality and selfish desires onto a creature who is just following its instincts, who is inherently free from these concepts and structures - until of course humans start meddling with it. I adore deeply that it exists as a bit of a mirror onto which the surrounding characters in the story project their own views and constructions of the world <3

This is so fun!! I've been pretty busy / on the move, so tbh it's been a LOT of silly trad doodles in margins- If you want the COMPLETELY accurate last three things I drew, that's below the cut, but these are the last three proper things-
