This Critical Thinking Skills module teaches me how to question assumptions, break down information, analyse problems from different angles, and justify our decisions as designers. Rather than accepting ideas at face value, the module encourages slow thinking, asking “why?”, and using logic to support creative choices. It’s less about having the “right answer” and more about having a clear reasoning process.
Visual Metaphor: “A Torch in a Foggy Forest”- It is a metaphorical expression used in a book or a speech to describe guidance, hope, or insight in times of confusion or difficulty.
I see critical thinking as holding a torch while walking through a foggy forest. The forest represents the complex problems I faced during my modules. The fog represents confusion, assumptions, and incomplete information that I have to solve. The torch represents questioning, reasoning, and clarity which help direct me in creating my ideas to overcome my problems.
this was how I felt like when I first step into Lasalle. I was lost and didn't know what to do. my lectures and friends helps me and guided me to improve and overcome my challenges.
My Favourite Activity or Session
My favourite session was the one where we were grouped in small groups with 4-5 members then we got to choose our quotes which then had to create and design a mindmap expanding on the quote itself. It stood out to me because it felt like detective work spotting biases, questioning decisions, and uncovering meanings beneath the surface. The activity was memorable because it made discussions lively, especially when people disagreed. It connected critical thinking directly to design.
What do you wish you did more of, or better?
Working in a group brings multiple perspectives that I might never consider on my own. Everyone notices different details, and when our ideas clash, the group is forced to justify their reasoning which leads to deeper understanding. Group work also helps improve communication skills, helps refine ideas through discussion, allows tasks to be approached from diverse angles and exposes blind spots in your thinking with the help of our group mates.
Like what Helen Keller's quote said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” this idea emphasizes the benefits of teamwork and diverse input in the design process.
What I Wish I Did More Of (or Did Better)
I wish I took more initiative in speaking up during group and class discussions. Sometimes I have ideas in mind but hesitated because I wasn’t fully confident in myself. I also wish I asked more questions instead of accepting the first idea that seemed “good enough.” If I continue improving, I want to participate more actively in discussions, challenge ideas more confidently and reflect more deeply before finalising decisions.
