Growing Down

Is un-maturing a thing?

The longer I know life the stranger it seems

Growing Down

I am running on a wooded trail after a soft rain,

And, as I look down to check the progress

Of mud on my shoes, I notice that my feet were

Pressing dead, black leaves into the sloshy ground

Probably by the hundreds, somewhat aiding them

Into their journey back to the dirt.

A tree that blooms from a seed in the soil

Will inevitably return to feed that soil,

Or so the leaves seem to say.

Trees grow down, they whisper,

And so do you.

Think of how a child will one day

Un-learn his walking. Of coming into the world

With nothing in your possession and leaving

With just as little. Even the music you make

From your lips returns to its roots:

Chorus, Refrain, or Recapitulation,

But the theme returns to itself and absorbs the newness.

How silly it is for people to believe they must

Stomp on each other’s heads to attain some

Higher end. You end every long day

By closing your eyes in the place you began it,

And yet you see no meaning in it.

So be through with anxiety, the leaves conclude,

And know you will return to us.

I stop, as the ambassador of humankind to the leaves,

Feeling it my duty to explain the actions of my species

To these small, fading masses. We look beyond

Ourselves, I say under my breath, scuffing mud

Off my shoes. When you die, you enrich the earth,

Letting the saplings growing in it grow taller than

You ever could. So humanity hopes will be the case

For generations to come.

We strive to make things better for our children,

I finish, and together we race towards a golden ideal.

I feel that this is a decent argument,

But all I receive is a twinkling laugh

That seems to come from the leaves and somehow

Resonate through all the trees in this wood —

Turning into a chuckle at the throat

Of the very earth.

How adorable, the voice says with

The affection of a lighthearted grandmother. This is why

We love you. So do as you wish, and we will

Return to you on the day when everything

Is destined to fall silent.
