War on Women: Men Can Be Feminists, Too
(c) chris carrasquillo
As anyone could tell by reading this hardcore punk band’s name, War on Women is a group of feminists. More surprisingly, this band is co-ed. “It is not hard to be a feminist,” shared Brooks Harlan, guitarist. “If you believe that everyone on the planet should have the same rights, then you are a feminist.”
The lyrical content of one of their songs, “Broken Record,” includes catcalls commonly heard by women experiencing street harassment. “Basically Shawna [vocalist] gets in some guy’s face for the entire song. At pretty much every show, I’d look out into the crowd during that song and just see younger women’s faces totally light up when they realize what is going on and what the song is about. I was really psyched to see that,” shared bassist Sue Werner.
So what specific issues are they most passionate about? “I feel the idea that we are in a ‘post-sexist’ society is really dangerous,” said Brooks. “It makes it easy for people to dismiss women’s issues. Around the world women struggle to gain access to health care, especially health care for their specific sexual and reproductive health needs.” ”Right now, in the US, I’d have to say that lack of access to reproductive health care is a huge problem,” Sue said, “and the scary thing is that there seem to be a lot of organizations with very deep pockets that are trying to reduce this access even further.” Vocalist Shawna Potter said that women’s reproductive rights are steadily being taken away, which is “really upsetting and scary.”
In addition to rocking out regularly at shows in their hometown of Baltimore, they played a Free Pussy Riot protest concert in front of the Russian Embassy in DC. With a new record coming out this year and more shows coming up, this group is ready to tear down the patriarchy and encourage both men and women to join the feminist cause!
