hoisery, found children’s dance shoes, uncomfortable childhood memories, fishing wire, thread

as a child, i took dance (ballet, tap, traditional chinese and taiwanese folk) classes along with traditional martial arts. i would come to class with ripped tights and get chastised for it. i never wanted to be a ballerina, but i longed to be graceful and accepted, but was always singled out for being too clumsy. ironically, in martial arts classes, i was criticized for being too soft. this piece explores the tension i felt during class as a child. walking through the room, the viewer is forced to interact with the suspended shoes, entering the world of my childhood self.
