Krampus is a fascinating figure from Central European folklore. Known as a menacing, horned creature, Krampus acts as a counterbalance to the jolly St. Nicholas. While St. Nicholas rewards well-behaved children with gifts, Krampus punishes those who have been naughty, often by swatting them with birch branches or dragging them to his lair.

Traditionally celebrated on December 5th, known as Krampusnacht (Krampus Night), people in some regions dress up as Krampus and participate in parades and festivities. It's a night filled with spooky fun and a bit of a scare to remind everyone to stay on the nice list! 👹⛓️🔔

Have you heard of the Perchten?

In the alpine regions of Eastern Europe, terror is very much alive throughout the winter season. However, during the Twelve Nights of Christmas, a witch and her minions (children? Cohorts?) wreak havoc through villages. The Perchten, led by Frau Perchta, are very similar to Krampus, and may be the origin of our beloved Holiday Devil.

Some villages hold parades and processions in costumes of these wicked creatures, called Perchtenlaufen! And it does indeed look like a ghoulishly good time!

We wish the Perchten well in their mischief! May they bring good holiday fear to all! 👹🎄❄️
