Have you heard of the Perchten?
In the alpine regions of Eastern Europe, terror is very much alive throughout the winter season. However, during the Twelve Nights of Christmas, a witch and her minions (children? Cohorts?) wreak havoc through villages. The Perchten, led by Frau Perchta, are very similar to Krampus, and may be the origin of our beloved Holiday Devil.
Some villages hold parades and processions in costumes of these wicked creatures, called Perchtenlaufen! And it does indeed look like a ghoulishly good time!
We wish the Perchten well in their mischief! May they bring good holiday fear to all! 👹🎄❄️
Ghoultide🎃🎄💀❄️
The Ghoul Log
In history, when many would gather together for the winter holidays, they would burn a Yule log. The Church of Samhain sees this as a wonderful tradition to be continued, with an additional element of ooky spookiness.
To prepare a Ghoul Log, gather some strips of paper, a pen, biodegradable ribbon or string (optional), and a log that’s ready to burn. (Feel free to add anything else that suits your fancy, so long as it’s safe to burn).
Go ahead and start your fire and enjoy the ambiance while you prepare the log. When preparing, write out some things you want to see in your new year on the strips of paper. What sort of goals do you have? What milestones do you want to reach? Write them out on the strips of paper and tie them to the log. Add whatever else you’d like, and then prepare to burn it.
Before burning, recite these words to remind yourself of the archetypes of the Monsters and what they represent:
“Like Dracula, my determination shall be undying.
Like Wolfman, the changes I make shall be for the better.
Like Stingy Jack, my ambition will burn through any setbacks.
Like the Creature of the Black Lagoon, my resilience will be upheld in even the murkiest of waters.”
Place the Ghoul Log in the fire and watch as it burns. Allow yourself to become entranced with the flame and visualize your intentions for the coming year.
Free Membership!
ATTENTION ALL:
The Church of Samhain has elected to waive our membership fee for all future members. We have come to the conclusion that community has no price tag, and neither should membership in the Church!
We stand to represent the religion of Samhainism, and we want as many spooky individuals to join us in our eerie efforts as possible! And so, we invite everyone who shares in our values to join the community of creepiness we seek to cultivate, and to share the ghoulish gospel with all who would hear it!
Our religion is one of strangeness, of haunting beauty, and of the most profound morbidity. Let it be known to all that we proclaim our place in the world, and we cannot wait to share our efforts with all that live on this ever-haunted rock!
Hail Samhain!
Happy Halloween!

👻🎄Ghoultide🎄👻
-December 21st til January 1st-
In old Yule traditions, the Wild Hunt took focus. Similar to Samhain and Halloween lore, the Wild Hunt involved a procession of spirits, including the dead, faeries, and other otherworldly beings. And so, the traditions of Yule are observed within Ghoultide!
The festivities of Ghoultide span several days, and can be celebrated in numerous ways. Ghoultide peaks on the 25th, with Ghostmas, an evening to gather with loved ones and friends and telling the spookiest and scariest ghost stories one can come up with! The tradition of gift giving associated with this time of year has passed over into Samhainism as well.
Ghoultide closes with January 1st, the day that Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus” was published.
Ghoultide be celebrated by:
storytelling
feasting
gift-giving
gathering by a fire
watching holiday-themed horror films.
spooky holiday parties
👹🎄Krampusnacht🎄👹
-December 5th-
December 5th has been noted in history as being the night that Krampus comes to beat naughty children. On Krampusnacht, we celebrate the attack of the Holiday Devil, and wish him well in his travels!
This holiday can be celebrated by:
throwing a Krampus-themed party
merrymaking
pranks
enjoying holiday-themed horror films.
🦇Strigoi Night🦇
-November 30th-
“Listen to them—the children of the night. What music they make!” -Dracula
In Romania, November 30th has been held in folklore as a night in which vampires are said to be the most active and dangerous. In this, the end of November in Romania has come to resemble many aspects of Halloween. And so, on Strigoi Night, we celebrate the attributes and traits of the vampire and all they represent.
This holiday can be celebrated by:
feasting
merrymaking
throwing a vampire-themed party
watching a vampire film
communing with friends.
The Coming War
Christmas has slowly been creeping in our sacred night. The War on Christmas has been fictitious and is, in all reality a projection, as opposed to the War on Halloween.
The day after spook night, I was just minding my business shopping when I was bombarded by holiday music, Christmas displays and marketing for the putrid celebration. The day after. Not even a full day cycle had passed before my eyes were assaulted with horrid sights of holiday cheer.
Enough is enough.
It’s time to stand up. Let’s assemble together and fight the Christmas oppression! Let’s make the War on Christmas real!
HALLOWEEN FOREVER!
You're not lying.
I went into Michael's today to pick up an order. Instantly, my nose was assaulted with that obnoxious pine/cinnamon artificial Christmas smell. It was so strong that it was irritating my eyes. And of course the Xmas stuff had spread all over, crowding out the Día de Muertos stuff and the autumn stuff. There was also Xmas music playing over the loudspeaker, and I thought "yep, it's coming in hot with the chemical warfare, blasting the propaganda music, trying to annex November.
Well fuck you, November belongs to Autumn, not to winter.
The war on Christmas will continue until Christmas ceases its illegal occupation of November.
Glory to Halloween. Glory to Autumn.
Halloween is so utterly distinct from every other holiday because it’s literally just about being weird and spooky and having fun. There’s horror movies on tv constantly and the stores are packed with decorations of spiderwebs and fake blood and you can dress as some rotting blood-splattered ghoul and that will be seen as awesome. Baking shows feature challenges where you compete to make the most disturbing and terrifying creations possible. Even commercials and ads often feature horror tropes and monsters. You can celebrate however you want, too; there’s no requirement for family gatherings or specific foods you have to eat or a certain way you’re expected to feel. The world just becomes a little strange and creepy for a month and then goes back to Family-Friendly Happy Times. It’s like Socially Mandated Goth Month and it makes me feel at home
The Trick Or Treat Treatise
The Trick Or Treat Treatise is a list of ten guidelines that Samhainists should strive to uphold in their lives. Essentially, these guidelines point out how a Samhainist should be living. It is our belief that by maintaining these points, we will be able to live life happily and hauntedly!
1.) Don’t rot out your fangs with too much candy.
Moderation is key for most pleasures in life. Treat (don’t trick!) yourself.
2.) Remember to take a rest in the coffin.
Sometimes, you need time away from others and a quiet place to relax. Find that place and care for yourself.
3.) Haunt your own house.
If another ghost tries to haunt your home, don’t be afraid to exorcise them. When in another’s home, show respect.
4.) Avoid angry mobs and monster slayers.
There will be people who don’t like you. Don’t waste a lot of effort trying to convince them otherwise. They may stake you.
5.) Behind every mask is a face.
Remember to be cautious of people, as many of them WILL pull a trick on you, if you let them. Not everyone is who they seem.
6.) Share your candy with your friends.
Show kindness to your loved ones. If they really mean something to you, make sure to show it. Being needlessly stingy doesn’t keep friends around for very long.
7.) Don’t throw your candy wrappers on the ground.
Make sure to clean up the messes you make, both literally and metaphorically. And NEVER leave trash outside!
8.) Don’t let anyone steal your candy. And if they try, steal theirs instead.
Don’t let others walk all over you. And if they do, then tell them to stop. If they continue, make them regret it. They asked for it.
9.) Be cautious about who you let read your spell book.
Don’t tell just anyone anything. Not everyone needs to know your business, and some secrets are better left kept.
10.) Don’t hurt little monsters or familiars.
A child’s innocence is precious. Never put them in harm’s way. The same goes for animals, unless for food.
Symbols of Samhainism: The Bat
Bats represent the necessary evils. While most people that love Halloween probably love bats, as well, there are still many who fear them; despite their essential role in the environment. We, like the bat, can rise above our fears!
Happy Halloween!
Hail Samhain!
