he notes that his robe sleeves are just slightly too long as he clutches the cuff’s against his palms, fingers folded overs and thumbs worrying the velvet absent-mindedly. the music seems almost a physical things as it caresses his ears, dancing just like those who move to its very own beat. the musicians are across the room, but the acoustics, maybe magically magnified, are spectacular, the lilting notes sounding almost right beside his ears. he’s never been to a ball before, but he’s glad he was able to attend this one. it’s unlike anything he’s ever experienced before. the stalactites and the carved ice sculptures, the beautiful food on the snack table and the bowl of what he assumes is punch, but with a somewhat questionable colour (he’s not sure punch should be turquoise) .
it was thanks to his hiding out in the very depths of the library in the weeks prior to the ball that he had attended alone. it wasn’t by choice, but he’d found something particularly interesting about a certain creature in a book that he simply had to do further reading on immediately. unfortunately that further reading had fallen right before the ball, and he’d ended up dateless. that, however, didn’t stop him from attending, and enjoying the event even if stood alone, watching the couples dance, the girls in their elegant attire and the men in some of the finest dress robes he’d seen.
catching a flutter of colour out of the corner of his eye he turns his head, the movement not unlike the rest in the great hall, but it catches his attention. a smile falls across his lips as his gaze falls upon jaimie - she looks beautiful, as all girls seem to once done up in their dresses for the ball. it’s a sort of magical moment, seeing everyone in entirely different attire to that which they usually wear. he’s not sure he can recall her in anything other than her uniform, even though he knows for a fact he’s seen her on weekends. despite that lapse in his memory he decides to plaster this image of her over all those missing pieces as he gives her a small wave from his solitary spot, all alone beside the chocolate eclairs.
