heyo finally caught up with all replies omG. i just wanted to give a headsup that tomorrow i’m going to be out of town for a week to visit the boyfriend so replies might be nonexistent/slow until i get back. i know i’ve been slacking on getting back to plotting so that will be my focus for that duration !!

[ ' the owl arrives on the exact hour christmas begins, bearing a rectangular box wrapped in shimmering gold. inside the box is a book on hogwarts' many ghosts, but its words are hexed to be indecipherable without an exact tool. slipped in its pages is a christmas card, charmed to sing a few notes of 'we wish you a merry christmas' in veovis' prized voice. hint: the cipher is attached to the card ] happy holidays, gullible miss. hope you enjoy ghost-hunting. [ ' the signed card reads ]

(   &. if there was any way for her to have known beforehand of the amount of hours she would pour into deciphering her gift (#sominnotthebrightestcrayoninthebox), she supposes she would still have accepted it with as much glee as she did the first time around. she’s not exactly the ungrateful type after all. in fact, much on the opposite side of the spectrum, she had done her best to piece together a gift full of muggle goods for the dear boy-- personally delivered because even if he didn’t like it, she had to thank him properly with a hug. it was only all the more rewarding of course, to see the reaction towards a christmas card that doesn’t stop singing for three hours. perhaps a singing balloon was in store for the next upcoming occasion. )

hymn for the weekend

It’s kind of sad sometimes, how the only thing that keeps Jay passionate is muggle music. But he isn’t complaining, he thinks he owns the muggle world, illegally stealing food and magically fluttering skirts back when he was an idiopathic-hormone-raging-eighteen year old. But he still can’t brush the former habit until now. 

Which in such case, he illegally sneaks a Coldplay ticket for himself, chancing upon his student who has a ticket too (whether she did the same is unknown, Jay ought not to dig deeper anyway) and who says having company to boot in a concert would suck? no. That’s why he agrees to watch the concert with a younger one– not really caring if he’d actually look like a father accompanying his most precious daughter. 

So, there he is in his muggle clothes, waiting for the younger and regretting to not ask for her number to contact– he just can’t afford risks and rumors, it annoys him.

for as much love as she has for all things wizarding and magic, somin has discovered there are still irreplaceables in the muggle world. familial love is incomparable, muggle tv shows irresistible, and far much more. it only happens to be one of many in which she choses to indulge in for the weekend.  

eagerness shows in her every stride -- though really when is she ever not a fire ball of energy and good vibes. excitement only heightens when she finds her company for the night, one that had come unexpected but nonetheless welcomed. 

“ prof prof prof !! ”

she chirps, all thousand watt smiles in greeting. she near tumbles into him at the speed she closes in on him, everything akin to an overeager puppy. it’s strange to see him out of the context of hogwarts, no classrooms and assigned wardrobe. he looks cool, charming even -- though truth be told he always had an air of charisma around him.

“ ooo~ooo so this is what it looks like? ”

she hums as she looks over the concert venue. fans are already lined up and the banners for the concert wave under the shake of the wind. it’s hard not to be hyped and she celebrates with a word she feels suits the older male’s style. “swag.” 

she’s not sure that the giggles that follow up fit the cool concept she had been going for.

the problem with heartbreak is that it is messy. there’s no one cure all, no simple route out. everything is only temporary, fleeting on the path to healing. so she takes what she can get, the only sense of grounding she feels in his arms. he’s too tall, too big for the conventional sense of fitting together but she finds comfort in the way he envelops her -- arms wide enough to carry her world, strong enough to carry her burden.  

he helps her forget as he always does and she holds him until she stops drowning. she holds him until she’s soaked through his shirt. she holds him until her tears quiet enough to hear the thrum of his heartbeat. 

and she holds him until --

“do you hate me?”

her voice is weak and waterlogged, all glass shards and vulnerability. he holds every right to make this his truth and she knows it well enough to be too ashamed to look him in eyes. her face burrows closer to his chest, fingers pressed into the fabric of his shirt. for as broken of a home her heart has become, she still wishes for pieces of him to live there.

again and again, she’s told herself that this isn’t right.

from the beginning, he never should have been more than a friend. in the middle, she should have known to stop before anyone got hurt. and now here, she makes her same mistakes again. yet she is a ghost, scrambling to find her place, to find herself and somehow she finds him her keeper. 

“kyle?”

for someone who had just heard him promise to be there soon, she still finds herself in disbelief in the amount of forgiveness he can have in his heart. window flies open in her haste and for a second there is a sense of calm in the storm raging in her brain. her laugh wavers in the midst of the lack of oxygen, too many sad songs playing in her heart. 

she thinks of witty replies, the banter they usually share. if she were anything her usual self, she’d probably offer an idiotic, no this is the krusty crab. but today she is not the jeon somin she knows herself to be. today, she’s just a little sad, in need of some love and tenderness that only he can bring.

so instead she smiles, all broken prettiness, eyes dewy where she usually shines. ( gives the last she has to give before she cries again. )

(   &. the world is such a nicer place when one does not expect too much, does not take everything as granted or as a given. for instead, somin likes to indulge in her simple joys, simple laughs that come all too often around him. ) is this not? i thought that’s was this was as soon as you sat down. (  &. she whispers, voice controlled where her smile isn’t. if only to make it clearer, she picks up the pen sitting on her notebook, flipping their interlaced hands so she can make use of the canvas on the back of his. little heart and smiley face gets drawn before she looks at him, twinkle in her eye. ) jeon somin, ready for adventure. the sniffle alarms him, the quiet shaking of her voice, the sadness transcending telephone static. 

“i’m here,” he assures her. 

kyle is a rag doll, all string hair and fraying stitches, and how many times she throws him around and leaves him behind makes no difference–they both know he’s not going anywhere.

he thinks she knows this. it should make him angry that she knows this. but even his anger is only ever love. thrown away and drenched in rain from the sidewalk she left him on, his anger can only ever be love.

“what’s wrong, mins? where are you?”

she’s a hoper, a dreamer -- built on the optimism of the world. yet for once, she is lost in her understanding of an end. call it dramatics and naivety but she has nothing if not for her emotions, her feelings, and that which connects her to the world.

“i’m sorry. i’m so sorry for this.” 

her guard cracks. he is the last person she’s allowed to cry to about this. still, tonight she discovers how selfish she can be.

drip drip drip. once the tears start, she can’t stop. 

“joseph.” her voice wavers, disgusted at how low she can sink. “he doesn’t -- doesn’t want to do this anymore.” it hurts just as much the second time when the words become concrete in the air. “ he doesn’t want me anymore.” 

she shrinks into herself, suffocated by a heavy heart. what a fool she is, clinging to his voice, a lifeline that she’d cut with her own hands.

lingering feelings and residual emotions, it’s all too clear here and now. his absence had been defining but never so much as when she’s in his arms, brief as it may be. 

“my time is yours.” she agrees easily, weak now in the face of his presence. she knows as clear as day who’s fault it is for the time spent apart. too many lies, too many plays and it was bound to catch up to her some day. but if there’s anything she can swear on, it’s that she never meant for it to be like this, never meant to bring him harm. 

“should i open it now or later?” she questions as they head towards the great hall. body stays just close enough that if maybe by chance they happen to swing their arms right, they’ll brush skin to skin, all accidental electricity. it’s opportunity now to pick at old scabs but she can’t resist the temptation, can’t resist him. heaven knows how hard she’s tried all this time.

“when are you heading home?” 

and for a simple question, she finds it rather sad -- something about having always known, having already been anticipating all the facetimes and virtual lunch dates.

(   &. the way her face animates, both hands shaking in alarm as she attempts to mask her surprise, would be comical if somin wasn’t so genuinely horrified. it happens nothing like in the movies, all slow motion and thirty seconds of despair as she watches helpless in the consequences of her action. instead, it strikes like lightning, one casualty after the other. the fourth year gets what he had coming but she’s afraid she’s done more damage than help at this point. ) oh shit oh shit oh shit.  (   &. the panic comes as she scrambles to the battlefield. ) i’m so sorry !!!! (   &. she practically whisper screams once she’s in proximity, arms hurrying to loop around the female’s figure in attempts to offer some support. ) i-- (   &. she’s reeling at the sudden events, eyes darting between the fourth year on the floor, the first year looking on with just as much confusion, and her poor victim. her free hand works in overtime, pointing like a broken compass at all of them as she tries to find some semblance of a coherent verbal explanation. ) oh my god.

she is not made for absence, for star less nights, for the cold of being alone. she wishes only to walk together, if even just within the shadows of someone who no longer desires to look back. so it feels all like broken homes and empty hearts in the quiet of this night. she sits, listens, shakes in yearning, drenched in the feeling of longing when his voice comes through. 

answers die in a graveyard on the tip of her tongue, restrained by shame, by reminder that she is in charge of the light. yet she is tired, weary, lost in the maze of a broken heart. 

“i just wanted to hear your voice.”

somehow she finds middle ground, confessing only enough to avoid showing her bleeding soul. for it is all too like a young child breaking a dish for a second time and expecting the same person to put the pieces back together. 

she holds the shatters, trying not to think about the tenderness pouring through his words. he will make her want for too much. there will be no end to her desire -- from his words, to his comfort, to his hands, and to his heart. he makes her soft when she is already too gentle, prime target for the harsh world. 

restraints are already at their limits and she has nowhere to go, little sniffle escaping from a heart too filled with grief, lonesome soul standing outside the door of one of the warmest homes she knows. still, she is undeserving, too far gone to even be allowed to knock at his door.

(   &. she’s completely wide smiles, amusement twinkling through a vivid shine in her eyes. she feels bad for half a second in the moment that jisoo braces for the unknown but somin is certain on how the aftermath shall unfold. wasn’t that the beauty of the connection of best friends after all? compliments are showered in the loudest of volumes, ending with a merry ‘have a great rest of your life, you cutie’ for simply a good day isn’t nearly enough for someone like jisoo. never mind the stares that are starting to ensue at the bizarre episode. it wouldn’t be the first time she’s pulled an abnormal act around here. ) i love you !! (  &. she proclaims with unrestrained giggles, sealing the deal with a quick blow of a kiss. )

(   &. he is all things sweet and wonderful -- a lover’s first kiss, the first ray of light on a summer day. heart flutters at the brush of lips and he reminds her of the way it could be, the way it should be. apologizes lay in the corners of her heart but he sweeps them away far too easily, lets her stay disillusioned with one squeeze of interlocked hands. something so wrong shouldn’t feel so right. ) yup! do you think toothless would let me finally put him in that cat astronaut backpack if i take some felix felicis? (   &. she queries, words all too revealing of her convoluted thought process when it comes to just about all her classes. her body leans in, using broad shoulders as the perfect place to rest her chin on, not even attempting to fight the sudden urge to give him a peck on the cheek. )

(/ class lets out early so he navigates to where she is. some red sting of fate tugs him to the library and he finds her–having a daydream by the looks of it. he puts his books down on the table and takes the empty seat beside her ) just so you know, in my mind that daydream was about me.

(   &. it is a wonder how unparalleled passion fails to equate to academic excellence. yet, still here she is, attempting to find some solution to find a middle ground. efforts spent are soon distracted though, first by her own mind before him. his appearance, while unexpected and perhaps contradictory to all purposes of her being in the library in the first place, is still all very welcomed. couldn’t have come any sooner, if she was telling the truth. ) oh. are you reading minds now? (   &. she accuses with a squint of her eyes, tone betraying with how playful she really feels. hand shoots up to cover her face as if to shield her from his supposed powers but it isn’t long before she’s in a fit of giggles. ) you know it’s a penny per thought, right? pay up.

(   &. red envelope sits pretty, harmless to any unsuspecting fellow. yet it’s no secret around these parts of the chaos that usually reigns when the letters unfold. years at hogwarts have led her to bear witness to the public shaming of others, some from parents and others from estranged lovers. yet, it is with no animosity or fury in which she sends out the howler. rather, it is all love and with too many giggles that she watches the howler get sent to her best friend across the dining hall, poor girl unsuspecting as she sits amongst her own house. )
