March 3 is Hina Matsuri in Japan. 🎎 This traditional Japanese event is also known as the Doll’s Festival or Girl’s Day and is celebrated across the country. Beautiful “hina” dolls are displayed on red carpet platforms in homes of families with daughters to pray for their health, future, growth, and prosperity. Back in the heyday of indigo dyeing during the Edo Period (1603-1868) there were 17 different family run indigo dye businesses in Gujo Hachiman. Today only one remains, Watanabe Somemono Traditional Indigo Dye Shop. The current master craftsman, Watanabe-san is the 15th generation of his family to take up the business. Spent the day in the historic castle town of Gujo Hachiman in Gifu Prefecture researching a project for a client. It was a very productive trip as I got to interview the head of the Gujo Odori Preservation Association and the President of the Watanabe Somemono Traditional Indigo Dye Shop.
