I'm sick. Bleh. Got an empty inbox when I need prompts as an urgent distraction. I want to write. I want to wriiiiite.

Anyway, gave up on that for tonight. Instead, I've been forced to edit some ASWYIC instead. It's nice getting back into my longfic. So I did this thing. Silly Levi Squad is all back together. And Gunther needs to touch grass and stop yapping. These idiots.

~ Chapter 9 Preview ~

“I can’t believe they stopped you on the train!” Eld gasped, “and what an excuse… a random ID card check! How did you get out of that one, Captain?”

Levi cleared his throat. “Didn’t have to. Kenny jumped to the wrong conclusion when he saw us travelling together.”

“Wrong conclusion?” Eld tilted his head, wondering, but Levi didn’t elaborate. There came a pregnant pause, before Petra uttered a small choking sound.

“But sir! You can’t go around letting people think that you- that you, of all people, would have an -” It was as though the word itself offended her. She shook her head, eyes wide and imploring.

“People will talk, sir. They’ll… call you a womaniser.” Petra sat back, looking scandalised.

“If that’s the case, then what’s the big deal?” Oluo lightly batted an open hand against her arm. “Like the Captain says, it’s a decent cover story.  It’s not as if the two of them are actually having an affair.” 

A flicker of doubt crossed his features. Oluo glanced at Levi cautiously.

“No,” Levi confirmed.

“It’s a trope!” Four heads turned to Gunther as he clapped a hand over his mouth.  “Sorry sir… but, unfortunately, it is. You see, I’ve encountered this so many times in different books.” 

The faces of Levi, Petra and Oluo betrayed their poorly-disguised disinterest. Eld, meanwhile, feigned an outward show of politeness. 

“Fake dating,” Gunther continued, fully committed to his colleagues’ cultural education, “it’s when two characters pretend to be an item, you know, out of convenience?”

“I can’t believe the trash you read,” Oluo groaned.

“What? It happens!” Gunther insisted, “two characters have to pretend to be a couple and then it almost pretty much always ends with them actually falling in love! It’s a winning formula.”

“Captain Levi is not in love!” Petra hissed. She gave a quick sweep of the empty hall before leaning closer. “And you shouldn’t spread gossip!”

Levi ended the exchange with a raised hand, “...back to what I was saying…”

Seeing the attentive faces of his unit, he continued. “The mission was successful in that we acquired what we needed. Their passport is being held at the CAB until we hear confirmation of an employment post. ‘Carla Jaeger’ is on the emigration waitlist as of yesterday. Now all we need to do is wait for the call.”

The others nodded.

“So, nothing else happened in Mitras?” Eld asked, “no one seemed suspicious of you, apart from what happened on the train?”

“As I said, all went as well as could be expected,” Levi replied smoothly.

“Did you two share a room?” Gunther blurted out. Petra’s mouth fell open. 

“Of course not! It wouldn’t be decent!” Oluo snorted indignantly, “unless…” He looked at Levi, with the same dubious expression as before. ”...is she a man after all? I suppose that wouldn’t mean anything. It would be just like soldiers bunking together at barracks.” 

Oluo folded his arms, satisfied with his own reasoning. A slow smile was creeping across Gunther’s face.

“Oh, my dear friend… clearly you don’t know half of what goes on between fellow soldiers in the barracks.”

It was Oluo’s turn to choke. “Are you mad? You could be shot, even for the insinuation!" But Gunther simply laughed.

“We were already talking tropes, right?’ Gunther’s hands moved as he spoke. “Well, there’s another one called - only one bed.” He lowered his arms and sighed.  “It’s the perfect excuse. If you know what I mean.”  

“Gunther, the fucking table knows what you mean.”

“I booked two rooms,” Levi interrupted through clenched teeth, “enough of this bullshit.” He stood noisily. There came a chorus of chairs scraping as the rest of his regiment followed.

“I’ve informed the Sergeant Major that you’ll return to barracks once the water pump repairs have been completed this evening.” He turned away, the tips of his ears conspicuously red. “I’ll see you back at the house.”

“Thank you, Levi. Really. I won’t forget the way you’ve gone out on a limb for me. You… and your squad. Never.”

Hange’s smile faltered.

“I keep thinking about once I leave here. I’ll never be able to tell anyone about the things you’ve done for me.” 

Levi bowed his head a little, taking up his cup by the rim. “No. You can’t. In fact…” He touched the cup to his lips. “It’s far better that you forget about all of this. Us.”

Series recap: Moblit fears for Hange's safety. Meanwhile, on the other side of the sea, Levi presents them with a choice; submit to the State Security Department for questioning or remain in hiding at the Captain's House in Shiganshina. Accepting the help of Levi's Squad however, means that Hange must follow their exact instructions.

Ch3: No World Without Walls (on AO3) “I don’t think you’re going to kill me, Levi…” Hange observed, chin resting against clasped hands, “I can tell you’re undecided about what to do. However, now that you know my name, it’s going to be harder for you to get rid of me.”

“Is that so?”

“Giving the bug a name is decisive because then it’s no longer an ‘it.’ Rather, it becomes something familiar. Through understanding it a little better, you learn to fear it less.”

Series recap: Marleyan scientist Hange Zoe receives a hostile welcome from Levi and his regiment when they inadvertently wash ashore on the coastal border near Wall Maria. Levi is suspicious of the Military Police’s involvement with a group of defectors caught fleeing the island.
