If the color orange were a musical…
gussie in the 2023 revival is ssooooooo pretty and nobody is talking about her..she also seems so well-fleshed out? I know as an audience you're not really supposed to like her but especially towards the end when you see how she got her start i really started feeling much more sympathetic towards her as opposed to just a homewrecker. yeah she's not a good person at the beginning (end?) but then again none of them are and idk i just find her so interesting
Merrily We Roll Along post canon au fic where in the mid/late 80s, Frank, Charley, and Mary, all due to various life circumstances, are somehow forced to work together again on a show (with the hc that Mary would write the book, Charley the lyrics, and Frank composing).
And they hate it but eventually start to work through their issues through the medium of creating art. And the musical they make is Merrily We Roll Along and it’s a meta commentary as much as it is a character study.
Gussie plays herself (because I refuse for her to not get a nuanced character portrayal). Frank actually helps write Franklin Shepherd Inc and Charley helps compose Growing Up. Mary is the one who comes up with the backwards timeline framing. Everything is awkward and messy and not what it used to be but something new. Is this anything.
Merrily We Roll Along ramble about Beth
I kind of feel bad that Beth doesn't get too much attention other than in her romantic relationship w other characters. She stood out to me bc we see her relationship w Frank and by extension the whole trio fall apart, directly bc of Gussie and Frank's ego. I read Gussie and Frank as being two sides of the same coin in terms of having their Egos tested and elevated in parts. So to see Beth, someone who was willing to take a chance on this ragtag production, and later, go against her parents' scorn for Frank's career, end up betrayed, it makes it all the more painful in retrospect. I like to think Beth is able to reconnect w Charley and star in 'Take a Left' and still make a career on Broadway.

Is it time to wake up the “Gussie Carnegie is a lesbian” tea or should I wait a little more
Gussie is so tragic because you know that she was forced and forced and forced to fit this image of who’s allowed to be famous and she chiseled herself away to fix that, and instead of pausing and wondering if this what she really wanted, she told herself that it was, and in fact it was what EVERYONE wanted. and so then she started pushing Frank to join her, pushing Frank to start chiseling himself away too, and when he wouldn’t chisel she picked up the hammer and chisel and did it herself because that’s what everyone wants, right?
And it almost reminds me of the damn “don’t be a fool, Andrea, everyone wants this” line from Devil Wears Prada of all things???
But I am just having so many Gussie thoughts right now, which is vaguely crazy because normally my only Gussie thought is “AHHHHHH”. But really she is Frank, or rather Frank is her, and then she guides Frank to follow in her footsteps, and not in a way of ‘it’s all Gussie’s fault that sweet lil Frank made the choices he did’ but more in a way that she showed him the way of chiseling parts off, and told him that that was he wanted, like she told HERSELF that that was what SHE wanted and how Joe Josephson probably told her that that was what she wanted and- *explodes*
