          there were a lot of things that he knew about mutt  --  the way he lived,  the small ways that he reacted to things,  how his life had no easy paths from birth to where he was now.  wherever his name came from,  it was an apt thing;  mutts on the street responded to everything in the same way.  kindness,  anger,  fear  --  they brought their teeth out and their tail low.  he could see that in mutt’s eyes.  

           “  i told you not to follow me here.  “  his eyes are flecked green,  and his voice is low.  regardless of what mutt had seen,  regardless of what he himself had done,  it didn’t mean that shilah wanted him involved in the same things.

          she knows he’s not going to like the fact that it’s just the pair of them again. this time, at least, roman isn’t far, but she still understands the reluctance on mutt’s behalf. she can’t blame him for it. so, because she knows better, she sets a glass of water down on the table beside him and returns to a chair across the room, folding into it easily. “-- looks like prizrak likes you.”

           he watches mutt walk by the door,  and notices something.  the little niche in the door that used to be at the top of the boy’s head couldn’t be seen anymore.  “  you’ve gotten taller.  “  he remarks,  wondering if a growth spurt was on the way for him.
