         she watches him carefully until that ashen look on his face –– frightened and like he didn’t know where he was and familiar in a way that had led her over here in the first place –– slips away. no one else has seemed to notice, but then again, she hadn’t expected them to; the others in the park are preoccupied, caught in their own stretches of grass and playground equipment. maybe it’s better. he looks like he’d prefer his privacy, and it’s enough to draw her hand away from his shoulder and back into her lap. 

          “you looked a little spooked there, for a minute.” it’s a poor attempt at a joke, something to put him at ease. “–– you sure you’re okay?”

          spooked is a soft word for it.  he doesn’t want this  --  he doesn’t want to keep worrying his friends,  his family.  to have everyone look at him like he’s some kind of freak or breakable glass that needed to be handled with care  --  he wanted everything to go back to before,  and to just hanging out with his friends and feeling like the world was still turning like it always did.  

          “  i’m sure.  “  he didn’t need to make a nice woman worry for him either.  “  really.  i  --  i was just doing homework.  “

          half the time, she doesn’t know what she’s doing here. hawkins doesn’t seem like much, she thinks, and certainly not like what she expected. it’s quiet. peaceful to those who live here, she’s sure, even though it’s not to her. (she’s too used to the hustle of the city, people at all hours of the night, cars driving by in the dark. the first night here, she couldn’t sleep. she’d spent hours watching the glow of the alarm clock instead, how it’d flipped from midnight to one to two to three before shilah, in the bed across from her, had woken up, too. they’d watched infomercials after that, early morning news reports. and still –– nothing. maybe she’d talked this place up too much in her head.) 

          still, in the park, she notices a boy sitting alone. a knot tightens in her stomach when she sees him stop, the look on his face familiar in a way that has her moving toward him, a hand on his shoulder before she can even think twice. 

          “hey,” she’s careful to keep her voice quiet, gentle. “everything’s –– here, just breathe. focus on that, first, all right?”

           he looks around quickly;  the sun is shining.  there are younger kids playing on the playground, laughing.  somewhere far off,  he can hear the dinging of an ice cream truck.  nothing was cold and grey and dead as it was in the upside down.  he relaxes,  taking a deep breath. 

           “  i’m okay.  “  he repeats.  (  he has never seen her,  but while hawkins was a quiet town,  there were still a number of people in it.  )  “  --  i was just thinking of something.  “

         mike and lucas are already passed out on the floor before the movie even finishes.  will watches until the credits roll,  the words falling softly upwards like they did in the movie theatre.  (  vhs  --  mike’s family would have it first,  of course,  and lucas’ family was looking into it next.  they could start to watch all their favorite things at home.  )  it clicks off once the credits are done,  and will moves from the chair to turn it off,  stepping around his friends.

          knowing it would be useless to wake any of them,  he finds the blankets and puts them over each of the boys.  when he gets to mike sitting slightly upright in the chair,  he startles as the other boy wakes.

          a quiet pause.  “  --  the movie is over.  “  he finally says,  offering the blanket.
