2. Carrying Snacks

Gwen sighed as the weight of her backpack dragged on her shoulders. Chemistry, History, and Music—all stacked together, along with their mandatory supplies. Who would’ve guessed a 500-page book about WWII could feel this heavy?

She let the bag drop to the floor with a dull thud, dialed in the familiar combination, and swung her locker open.

Out went the textbooks, in came her music books and sheets. Luckily, her assigned instrument was already waiting in the music room.

As she slid the last book into her bag, a loud growl came from her stomach.

“Right. Food,” she muttered. How could she forget again? Sixth time this month.

Worse, there wasn’t even time to grab an energy bar—the bell shrieked through the hallway. Next class.

Gwen hoisted the backpack, slammed the locker shut, and broke into a sprint toward the music building. 

Running, with no time left for distractions, Gwen shoved the glass door open. The sharp scent of freshly cut grass drifted in. A few kids walked alongside her, heading toward the same building.

“Hey!” A familiar voice called.

Gwen froze, watching the others file inside before she turned. Duncan stood there, like he’d forgotten something.

“Hey,” she answered, hitching her backpack higher. “I thought I’d see you after class.”

“Yeah, well… guess I came sooner.” He strolled over. “Wanted to check up.”

Her brow furrowed. “Check what?”

“I don’t know…” He glanced around, then back at her. “Maybe if you’d eaten anything?”

Gwen scoffed. “What do you mean?”

“Please. Have you forgotten the time your blood pressure tanked in Chem? And I had to step in for your mom.”

“Oh, come on. I’m not gonna starve to death. I’ll grab something after class.”

Duncan gave her a long, skeptical look.

“I swear,” Gwen said, raising her hand like an oath. “I promise I won’t faint in class.”

Right then, the bell blared again—her music class had started.

“Shit! I gotta go.” She spun toward the door.

Before she could rush off, Duncan slid a blueberry energy bar—her favorite—into the side pocket of her backpack.

Gwen turned back, oblivious. “This is my last class, so wait for me.”

He nodded and leaned in, stealing a quick peck. “Sure. When you’re done, we’ll grab food. My treat.”

She let out a small laugh. “You’re being awfully nice this week. What did you break?”

“Plenty,” he grinned. “Now go, airhead.”

“Alright.” Gwen headed inside, a smile lingering on her lips.

The minivan skidded to a stop at the end of the muddy road, as DJ shut the engine with a turn of the key.

“I told you we shouldn’t have taken the high route!” Heather screeched, shoving the door open so hard it rattled on its hinges. “This junk barely made it up here!” She shook herself off dramatically, brushing at imaginary dirt from six hours on the road.

“But it did,” Leshawna shot back, hot on her heels. She yanked open the back door with a grunt. “Now quit your whining and start hauling luggage.”

Heather let out a sharp scoff. “Please. My manicure would be ruined. I’m taking a shower. Good luck, minions.”

She strutted off without another glance.

“HEY! Get your bratty ass back here!” Leshawna shouted, pointing after her. “You better carry your own damn bag—” Then she dashed toward Heather, reproaching her on the way up to the cabin’ stairs.

“Holy fucking shit, get me out of here.” Duncan slammed the car door, irritation dripping off his voice. Gwen trailed after him. “If those two bicker all weekend, I’ll start murdering people.”

She scoffed a laugh, numbed by their shouting. “Yeah, like that would shut them up. I don’t even know why Heather tagged along. It’s not like she likes any of us.”

Duncan walked toward the opened back door of the minivan, yanking a bag from it. “Pretty sure the sauna and jacuzzi sold her. Her eyes popped out like a damn cartoon character the second she heard.”

That earned a chuckle out of Gwen, the image clear enough to crack her mood.

“Yeah,” she sighed, “should’ve packed my earplugs.”

“Or,” Duncan said with a grin, “we could throw ’em in a blender and solve the problem.”

“Hey, Leshawna’s a friend. I’d never stir her into a smoothie.”

“Hey, guys.” DJ jogged up to them, eyeing the mountain of bags. “Need a hand? I swear Heather brought, like… five suitcases.” He shook his head. “That’s excessive. What’s even in those things?”

Duncan smirked. “Maybe they’re empty. Easier to hide our bodies in them later.”

“Or she would stuffed a raccoon so she can make herself a cute scarf,” Gwen added with a grin.

DJ flinched. “Jesus. That’s not where my mind went.”

“It’s okay,” Duncan shrugged like it was nothing. “We’ll help.”

“Corruption spreads quickly,” Gwen said, still leaning into the bit.

DJ held up his hands. “No, no—none of that. I just wanna relax, okay? No pranks. Last trip was a disaster after… someone cut the brakes on the bus.”

“Who would ever do such a thing?” Duncan’s tone dripped with mock innocence.

DJ sighed, dropping it. He grabbed three of Heather’s bags—two in his hands and one wedged under his arm. “I’ll see you inside. Don’t forget the food and drinks first. My chicken skewers gotta stay fresh.”

“Copy that, Captain.” Duncan mocked with a salute.

“I’m not captain!” DJ called back, heading for the stairs.

“Well, if you didn’t invite us, we wouldn’t even be here,” Gwen muttered under her breath.

A sudden clap snapped their attention back to the car. Geoff stood there, grinning. “We hauling all this upstairs? That’s a lotta luggage.”

“You’re not helping?” Duncan asked, though he already knew the answer.

“Oh, I am,” Geoff said quickly. He bent down and tugged one item from the pile—a massive stereo-booster. “This is all I need. Without this baby, I’m not me.”

“Seriously?” Duncan gave him a flat look. 

“Dude, can’t have a party without hype music! The best part? No neighbors within thirty meters to complain.”

“Pretty sure the raccoons will file a noise complaint sooner or later,” Gwen deadpanned.

Geoff hoisted the stereo onto his shoulder with a grin. “Then that’s another animal kingdom’s problem. I’m here to party!”

“…another?” Gwen murmured.

Before anyone could say another word, Owen bounded up with a grin plastered across his face.

“Come on, guys! Toss me a heavy one, I can handle it!” He stretched out his arms, ready for the challenge.

Duncan snickered. “Yeah, sure. Here.” He dropped a couple of the heaviest bags into Owen’s grip. 

The weight nearly sent him crashing to the ground, but Owen locked his knees and forced a smile, desperate to look steady.

“Oooh, Owen~” Izzy sing-songed as she skipped up behind him. She gave his arm a squeeze. “You’re really strong. Been training for something?”

“Y–yeah!” Owen wheezed, wobbling but refusing to drop the bags. “All—for you, babe! Look—I can handle it with one hand!”

While Izzy chatted and sweet-talked a struggling Owen up the stairs, Duncan watched with a shake of his head. “Hm, love really makes you stupid.”

Gwen shrugged. “It’s a typical strength show-off.” They began to walk up the stairs, each with two bags in their hands. Then, a sly idea struck her. “Like every man, right?”

Duncan’s eyes narrowed for a beat before a smirk spread across his face. “Yeah? Want me to carry your stuff? You know you could just ask.”

“I mean… not just my stuff, but everything I’m carrying,” she said, dropping her bag into his arms and nearly tipping him over. “Pure strength.”

“Okay… you’re definitely pushing it.”

“I am. See you at the top!”

Duncan scoffed a laugh, now with four bags in each hand.

Lilith's Revenge

The knife trembled in Gwen’s hand as the ritual seal around her began to pulse with dark energy. The candles flared, their flames stretching upward, reaching for the moon until its glow began to breathe. Lilith had heard her. "𝑂𝑛𝑒 𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑡 𝑜𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔, 𝑚𝑦 𝑑𝑎𝑢𝑔ℎ𝑡𝑒𝑟. 𝐹𝑙𝑒𝑠ℎ 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑠 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑑𝑒𝑎𝑑. 𝐵𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔 ℎ𝑖𝑚 𝑡𝑜 𝑚𝑒, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑒𝑚𝑏𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑒 𝑚𝑦 𝑝𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟.”

The wind howled through the graveyard, sweeping dead leaves across patches of withered grass. Moonlight pierced the night, casting a cold glow over broken tombstones—forgotten by time, but cherished by others. The creatures of the dark. Drawn by curiosity to the morbid and the unknown.

And soon enough, they met their gods. Their demons.

Surrounded by graves, Gwen knelt in silent reverence. A wide red circle encased her, symbols and runes etched into the dirt, painted by her own hand. Six candles lit up, glued to the borders of the red ink, dripped on their own wax, illuminating the macabre scenery.

An offering to her goddess.

Lilith. The Dark Feminine.

A force of power, of hunger, of virtue, for those who prove themselves worthy. The path is long and sacrificial. To be chosen. To stand at Lilith’s side. To become her daughter.

"Domina Lilith, Nocturna Regina,

Accedo nudam animam meam ad altare tuum.”

(Lady Lilith, Queen of the Night, I bring my bare soul to your altar.)

As Gwen recited her prayer with veneration, the ritual blade sliced across her palm, drawing blood instantly. She clenched her fist around the wound, letting it pool, then raised it to the heavens in offering.

“Sanguinem, carnem, et concupiscentiam offero. Aperi mihi portam potentiae. Fac me vas desiderii tui!”

(I offer blood, flesh, and desire. Open to me the gate of power. Make me the vessel of your will!)

A fire ignited deep inside her, spreading like smoke through her veins. Her mind twisted with noise, her body going numb as if her soul was being torn loose. Still, she spoke—her voice no longer hers, but something older, darker, speaking through her.

“Ego sum tua. Sume me. Consume me.”

(I am yours. Take me. Devour me.)

Blood. More blood—flooding her mind, staining her vision. The night swallowed her whole, vast as the universe itself. She didn’t just stand in the dark. She became it.

“Et per me, renascere!"

(And through me, be reborn!)

As the final word slipped from her lips, a thunder cracked through her body—loud, tearing the breath from her lungs. She gasped, desperate for a sign.

‘Did she hear me? Am I…?’

Gwen’s eyes snapped open. No.

She couldn’t doubt now. Lilith will choose her. Lilith will become her.

Her throat tightened. Swallowing became harder, something thick swirled at the back of her mouth, flooding her senses. Her tongue tasted it—coppery and hot. Blood. Her own blood.

Streams of red slid from the corners of her mouth. Then came a violent and unholy surge. Blood poured from her lips, her teeth, her chin. It drenched her throat and soaked the front of her ruffled black dress, staining her in crimson ecstasy. Lust. Madness.

Her mind fractured. Her body convulsed. Something had taken over.

And then, the ground pulsed beneath her.

The wind snapped, shifting direction. Candles flickered violently, then flared a fluorescent red. Flame that once danced now froze—taller and unnaturally still.

She felt it. Lilith had heard her.

A whisper in her numbed mind follows.

“𝐺𝑜𝑜𝑑. 𝑌𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑖𝑠 𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑜𝑛𝑔.”

Gwen lurched forward, coughing up another wave of blood that splattered across the handmade seal, soaking the offerings in red.

"𝑇ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑝𝑎𝑡ℎ 𝑑𝑒𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑠 𝑛𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑏𝑢𝑡 𝑝𝑎𝑖𝑛 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑟𝑎𝑔𝑒. 𝑌𝑜𝑢 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑏𝑒 ℎ𝑢𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑑, 𝑏𝑒𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑦𝑒𝑑, 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑛 𝑏𝑦 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑙𝑜𝑣𝑒 𝑚𝑜𝑠𝑡. 𝐵𝑢𝑡 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑤𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑏𝑜𝑟𝑛 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑝𝑒𝑎𝑐𝑒, 𝑚𝑦 𝑠𝑤𝑒𝑒𝑡 𝑑𝑎𝑢𝑔ℎ𝑡𝑒𝑟—𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑤𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑏𝑜𝑟𝑛 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑣𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑒𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒. 𝑆𝑜 𝑡𝑎𝑘𝑒 𝑖𝑡. 𝑇𝑎𝑘𝑒 𝑖𝑡 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑚𝑒."

A burning sensation grew at the center of her chest, searing from the inside out. A red, scorching orb had formed inside her, begging to be released. The pain was unbearable. If her throat weren’t clogged with blood, she would've screamed like she was being burned alive. The smell of scorched flesh hit her next, acrid and unmistakably her own.

She looked down. A glowing mark had been branded into her skin. Lilith’s.

"𝑂𝑛𝑒 𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑡 𝑜𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔, 𝑚𝑦 𝑑𝑎𝑢𝑔ℎ𝑡𝑒𝑟. 𝐹𝑙𝑒𝑠ℎ 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑠 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑑𝑒𝑎𝑑. 𝐵𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔 ℎ𝑖𝑚 𝑡𝑜 𝑚𝑒, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑒𝑚𝑏𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑒 𝑚𝑦 𝑝𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟."

The wind shifted unnaturally once again, this time to the left. Gwen’s head turned in that direction, following the goddess sign. Her next victim was near.

+1. He Lets Her See It. She knew.

Agitated and sweaty bodies pressed along the couple, everyone buzzing with leftover adrenaline, still howling and shoving after the heavy metal concert had ended. The Canadian night cut colder as the crowd spilled into the streets. Wind brushed at bare skin, though a few shirtless diehards didn’t seem to notice, still riding the high.

Duncan exhaled a cloud of white air and draped an arm lazily around his girlfriend, pulling her close far from the fanatics.

“So?” he asked, smirking. “What’d you think?”

“I’ll tell you once my ears stop ringing,” Gwen shook her head, arms folded tight across her chest for warmth.

He replied with a lighthearted chuckle.

Around them, fans shouted lyrics, slammed shoulders, and blocked cars as if the concert hadn’t ended. Duncan pulled her tighter against his side.

“Come on, I can walk,” Gwen teased, glancing up at him. “This isn’t my first show.”

“Yeah? Well… maybe one of these glass-munching psychos will try to drag you off.”

She laughed, slipping a hand over his, squeezing into his grip. “I’m not worried about that. I know you’d find me sooner or later.” Her gaze lingered on him a bit longer, and her smile curving upward. “You’ve been taking this guardian angel role pretty seriously.”

“Huh?” Duncan’s smirk faltered, his brow cocking like he’d misheard. “What are you talking about?”

Gwen’s smile only grew, seeing right through his act. “Well, I don’t know… somehow things started to fall into place, like I’ve been having a streak of luck.”

Duncan hummed in response, listening but not offering much else.

So she kept going. “That energy bar really saved me from a dull class, and even worse, from starving. And somehow Odin’s been putting on weight. He’s been purring more, and screaming less for food.”

Duncan nodded, though his eyes drifted everywhere but her.

“And those idiots from school? Gone. Those cowards don’t even pay me attention anymore, like my mere sight scared them to death.”

That one pulled a scoff of laughter from him.

She watched his features soften at her words, so she continued on. “And that rusted bike that I thought was a lost cause? A little goblin must’ve waved his wand, because it was suddenly fixed and waiting on my doorstep.” Her voice took on a playful, exaggerated pitch.

Duncan shook his head, laughing now. “Alright, alright. That’s enough.”

“Why? Can’t I thank my anonymous helper?” she kept teasing. Her eyes lingered over the swarm of people, as her voice dropped quieter. “And I wish I could tell him that I feel loved, in a way I never have before. I don’t know who he is, but I appreciate everything he’s done for me.”

Gwen’s hand intertwined over his grip. “Having someone notice the little things, especially when I’m having the worst kind of day, suddenly, it doesn’t feel so heavy anymore.”

“It makes me feel seen. And for once, I feel… cared for. Like someone’s out there making sure I don’t fall apart, even when I don’t ask. That means more to me than I can ever say.”

“So,” Her exaggerated pitch came back, turning to her boyfriend, “Whoever he is… he matters a lot to me.”

Duncan didn't dodge with his usual grin. He just looked right at her, with a real smile spread across his face. "Seems like that little goblin likes seeing you smile." He pulled her in closer, arm tight around her.

As their hug tightened, a sudden gust of wind swept through, making Gwen shiver against him. Duncan caught it immediately.

“Here, take this.” He shrugged off his jacket and draped it over her shoulders before she could protest.

Gwen let out a small scoff as he adjusted the collar, the warmth of the leather still carrying him. It felt nice being cared for like this out in the open. She tugged the jacket closer. “Guess that mystery helper’s got some competition now.”

His hand found her waist again. “No one’s even close,” he murmured, pulling her back in.

“Really?”

“Yeah. You forgot about your doodle that's still in my wallet. I like looking at it whenever I start missing your pasty face.”

Gwen laughed softly. “So it was you, then?” “Of course.” He tilted his head, smiling. “Because you matter to me.” He leaned in and brushed her lips with his. “A lot.”
