HACK MAKE MEET DRINK
Join me and the crafty, techny community tomorrow night on Wednesday 26th February from 7pm at the Waiting Room for the Hack Maker Space social at Maker Wednesday. Mark & me will be talking about the progression and upcoming workshops. You're welcome to bring along a project to work on with the group. We'd love to see what you're developing/making/hacking.
We host Maker Wednesdays every week. They provide a flavour of what’s on offer at our Hack/Maker/Library/Space - A shared workshop environment, accessed via a pay what you can membership scheme - They are free and informal workshop sessions held at the Waiting Room. They are open to everyone of all ages, backgrounds and skills. Community Manager Alex Davis (that's me) is passionate about all things craft and I've joined forces with local technology lover Mark Sta Ana to run the weekly event. We're regular fixtures so you're welcome to pop along to say hello and find out more.
This week is a social so join the us to hear more about the project, meet some of the friendly faces involved and sign up for an upcoming workshops.
Hack Space: Foulabs
So today had its ups and downs. For one, I found out my admission for university would have to be delayed, as they require me to take an English test (coz I'm from Canada and all hence I'm a foreign student). The delay isn't too bad, I won't be late but I won't be early either which scared me a bit. Afterwards, however, I decided I'd check out a hack space I'd found online, called Foulabs. It's basically an open garage where people do stuff that range from, building radios and 3d printers to animating stop motion lego movies. It's kind of kick ass. At first I was scared, thinking maybe the people there would be in-your-face know-it-alls that would mock me for my little knowledge. But what I found was quite the contrary. I immediately felt at ease when I walked in and saw all the friendly faces turn to me, and kind of at home. I didn't do much on my first night, I started making a big lego crab but didn't finish, then I discussed with someone how I would go about making a Fallout 3 pip-boy in real life. He gave me names of the hardware I should buy which was real cool. Anyway, a night that ends rather well, coz at least I know if I don't get accepted to uni next year I've got some places to go to to learn still. Signing out, 'night party people

Maker Wednesdays
Read the original post of the St Botolph's site The St Botolph's Hack Maker Space is developing. It's a maker/tinker/space/lab/thingy – often described elsewhere as a 'Hack Space'. It's a place where people interested in technology and making can socialise, share access to kit, and collaborate.
Working with tech man and hacker extraordinaire Mark Sta Ana. I will be leading the making, craft and traditional tool side of a Hack Maker Space. We have six lockable resident studios, a shared members workshop, and tool space that local creatives can rent to further develop their practice, work and projects.
This will be complimented by the Maker Directory I have been working on the last few months, a growing online database of local makers, artists and hackers.
We meet every Wednesday for Maker Wednesdays. And you are all invited to join us to hack, make, socialise and to find out more. The event is a weekly session providing free open, knowledge exchange for local people to learn craft and hacking skills with free access to the studios and shared spaces.
Each session will be co-hosted by a specialist in the making or hacking field and you can bring the relevant materials to join in with their informal workshop or simply bring on your own projects to enjoy with the group.
This format allows for knowledge exchange to develop with local makers and hackers. You could learn from our co-host, ask your neighbours some questions or discover a new machine or tool from our pool of resources. From wiring your own circuit, to using a knitting machine, we want to encourage local people to share or learn craft and hacking skills with free access to studio spaces and shared tools.
For this week's event we are joined by the Good For Nothing boys. Good for Nothing is a community of thinkers, do-ers, makers and tinkerers applying their skills and energy to accelerate the work of cause-led innovators and change makers; it's about diverse groups of people collaborating together. They aim to solve challenges collaboratively – on and offline – through gigs (24 to 48 hour think, hack, do creative collaboration events).
Join Mike & Gaz this Wednesday 7th Wednesday for a mini social at the St Botolph's Waiting Room from 7:30pm - late. Nothing formal, just a chance for a get together with the organisers before they kick off for their 24hr gig.
You can also join Mark & me this Wednesday to find out more about this exciting & developing social hack maker space in Colchester.

Safecast, a non-profit that seemed to spontaneously form following the accident, began collecting and publishing radiation readings, developing measurement tools, and analyzing data. Safecast is an interesting example of citizen science for a number of reasons. First, Safecast is participant-driven.
