Abney Park Cemetery, Stoke Newington
I have grown a sudden interest for the space for the dead in our city and I begun my exploration of the burial sites in my area to gain further insight. Last weekend I visited Abney Park Cemetery and St Paul’s Church in Stoke Newington. Both these sites have been out of use (burial wise) for many years and now Abney Park Cemetery is a walking trail and St Paul’s doubles as a park with playground features.
Coming from a very Catholic country it is so strange to see a place that is to be treated with respect, dignity and solemness to now be a place for leisure and relaxation. But I think it’s a great idea. In a city where we have to use the space that we have, a burial ground that is not in use should be transformed into a nature trail or a playground. It’s adding to the history of that place.
I love being from london, especially from a borough that is becoming "hip" because all these amazing artists are coming from there and use my area in their music videos and i like have a party everytime i see some where i recognise.
