Wei Wuxian can consciously debuff ghosts, but it takes a lot more effort
He mostly uses this to mess with He Xuan all while claiming it’s not him, but the pregnancy taking his energy
Learning that he could take energy as well as give it was a skill that Wei Wuxian learned later.
Was forced to learn.
For all the ghosts and bodies that filled Mount Tonglu, alliances only ended in one pair of blood soaked hands and the taste of betrayal on dying lips. Wei Wuxian had known that even before he had decided to fight his way into, then out of, the Kiln. Had known it from Hua Cheng’s own tales.
(“Everyone is alone in that mountain, A-Ying. Only the idiots think otherwise.”)
It doesn’t matter for a long time. Even alone, even without a sword, even with the very landscape attempting to kill him, Wei Wuxian is a particularly powerful wrath. One with a reason to make this opening of the damned mountain as short and brutal as possible. He tears through other ghosts with his bare hands, floods them with too much energy until their minds shatter, taking down their supposed allies before finally themselves, steals weapons and discards them far more bloody than how he found them.
He is the Yiling Patriarch again.
He is that fractured, starving thing that clawed his way out of the deepest, most resentment filled pits of the Burial Mounds with nothing more than broken fingernails and a freshly crafted flute on his hip.
His mind is silent through the slaughter. That cold detachment that flooded his mouth with the iron tang of blood filling him again.
He knew the fights would get harder the closer he got. Knew that the fight inside would be a whole new level of slaughter.
He is still taken off guard.
The wrath across from him, blood drenched and laughing in her funeral white and bare feet, isn’t someone he recognizes even from the rumors whispered in terrified voices before he silenced them forever. He doubts she recognizes him either.
Neither of them left any survivors to spread their names.
His hands are empty and drenched in blood. He had left Chenqing beside Hua Cheng’s tiny, trembling body before setting out for this slaughter as a promise. As an apology. He will see both of them again. This wrath will not stop him.
But her mind is already fractured. But she has killed just as much as he had to get here and would not be felled easily. But Wei Wuxian had shattered his last sword and cast it aside before throwing himself into the closing kiln.
(Hua Cheng’s Crown Prince smiles down upon him, his gentle face the one spark of beauty in this barren place. He can almost see the hands lovingly carving the serene expression. Can feel the desperation to live in every line.)
Wei Wuxian will return to him. Will see Hua Cheng reunited with his Crown Prince.
He just has to figure out how.
In the end, it is no elegant fight. No glorious slaughter from two would-be-calamities. The two wraths lunge at each other and fight in the dirt like animals. Tearing at each other with nails and teeth and whatever fragments of rock are close enough to get their hands on.
Long nailed fingers close around Wei Wuxian’s throat, squeezing so hard he can feel her sharp nails breaking the delicate skin.
He will return home.
He has to.
In his desperation, something in him snaps.
The wrath screams above him trying to pull her hands away only to watch as they crumble instead. Staggering into unsteady feet that break into ash and dust even as she falls back.
Wei Wuxian feels an answering flood of resentment so powerful he can taste it.
He consumes all of her. Leaves her just one more shattered pile of ash in this horrible place. There is no time for him to feel horror. No time for him to hear the echo of Lan Zhan’s voice telling him he has crossed another line.
The kiln has closed with him inside, and he is running out of time to get back out.
(It comes as a relief, later, years removed from the slaughter and with the familiar weight of his bone mask on Xiao Hua’s face, that he can use that terrible power for a laugh. That the power he once used to leave nothing but death and ash in his wake can now be used to make Black Water’s eye twitch in that way that always made Xiao Hua laugh all the harder.
Besides, Black Water deserved it, and if Shi Qingxuan had a problem with the pregnancy rumors they would have told him to stop by now.)
Jesus wasn't that special for dying and coming back. My blorbos do that all the time

Hey, I love the fics you post and I was wondering if you have an ao3 account I can follow? Sorry if that info is somewhere on your blog - I'm on mobile and can't see anything (:
eeeeeeeeeeeeep <333
First of all, THANK YOU! I’m so happy to hear you’re enjoying my works *^*
Second, yes, I do have an ao3 account (here!), but to be honest I keep slacking when it comes to posting stuff on there… most of the things I post are so short that it just doesn’t feel like they belong on there at all? And then there’s other things that I do mean to post, but life being eugh and me being constantly busy keeps preventing me from doing so… (and needing to come up with titles for all of them. Is2g, titling fic is THE BANE OF MY EXISTENCE).
So yes, that’s my ao3 account. I’m sorry it’s so awfully empty. I’m trying to be better at it, I promise! (on the bright side, the rbb fic is coming soon, so that at least WILL get posted there. Yay?)
