Bert’s (true) First & Last Name
Bert’s parents were a subject of scandal. His Duskwight father, was a Redbelly bandit, while Bert’s Midlander mother, was a newly recruited, fresh faced Wood Wailer.
According to Bert’s biological father, Apollinaire, he and Nadja fell madly in love. They had plans on eloping, and living anywhere but in Gridania. When the two lovers were caught by Nadia’s parents, the angered grandparents claimed the ‘Grey bastard had ravaged their daughter’. Apollinaire had no choice but to leave Nadja behind or risk imprisonment or worse if Nadia’s father had his way.
As Apollinaire struggled in other lands as a mercenary... Nadia’s pregnancy caused outrage in her family. She was obviously dismissed from the Wood Wailers and found out that her own parents planned on selling her newborn. She made the decision to escape from Gridania in order to find Apollinaire. Unfortunately, she went into labor, upon being captured by her former Wood Wailer comrades.
She was immediately sent to Conjurers and Padjals in Nadia died due to complications. Her parents grieved, but were too proud to show it. When the narrow-minded assholes showed up, to collect Nadia’s body, they glared at the ‘half-thing’, then left the conjurers with a journal page from their daughter’s belongings. On the page was the name Nadia and Apollinaire gave their ‘Beautiful, Wonderful Baby Boy: Apollonius Tristachambel.
Bert’s adoptive First & Last Name
A few days later went by. Bert was kept amongst orphans in Gridania. His grandparents never visited him. They never asked about him. They wanted nothing to do with him. Upon the revelation of Nadia’s journal page, the locals realized the error of their ways... at least for the moment. They dropped pending charges for Apollinaire (big whoop). Some of the Wood Wailers tried to make a truce with the Redbelly bandits in order to get info on Apollinaire’s whereabouts, but it did NOT work out.
Travelling Merchants from Ul'dah, including the Fendersons. They were a rare sight to see amongst Ul’dah’s well to do. This Ala Mhigan family was LUCKY. Einrich and his wife Bertha Fenderson started out as desperate mercenaries for hire. Upon stopping a wealthing Ul’dah merchant from assassination, they were given a decent amount of gil and treasure from the grateful merchant. Instead of spending it all at a bar or inn, Einrich and Bertha decided to ask the merchant for guidance into the world of getting that PHAT BANK.
While Einrich and their twin sons (Erich & Dietrich) were conducting business in the Shaded Bower, Bertha wandered about Gridania on her own. She spotted children playing near the orphanage and became sad. Just two weeks ago Bertha had a stillbirth. Her mind was still spinning from the loss. Einrich and her boys tried desperately to help her cope, but it seemed that this was a struggle for Bertha to deal with on her own terms. Einrich insisted that Bertha, above all else should not be left alone at their home. He needed to be near her, in case her thoughts went to a dark, unknown place. He can cope with the fact that his wife can no longer have children, but he simply cannot lose her.
However, Bertha wandered off, lured by the sounds of playing children
... and a VERY loud & hungry newborn Elezen baby boy.
“He’s not a desirable baby.” Stated one of the caretakers, standing next to Bertha in the nearly vacant nursery. “See his pale skin? Most certainly, a Grey.”
Bertha looked at the gangly, newborn. His umbilical cord still healing. He had the a such a angry, freckled face-- all-tear streaked and red. It didn’t match his pale body. She picked up the incredibly lightweight newborn, and smoothed her hands over his back. “You’re so fussy. Come here, you little troublemaker.” The baby began sucling on her face, and started fussing in frustration. He’s starving! Bertha turned towards the nonchalant caretaker, “What guttersnipe calls a baby “undesirable”. You sure you’re even feeding him?”
“W-WH-what?!” The caretaker stammered nervously, “You don’t understand, he’s---”
“People-- especially babies-- deserve a chance.” Bertha snapped, as she walked out of the orphanage nursery. A few minutes later she stormed back into the nursery. No fucks were given, because she was straight up breastfeeding the newborn in stride. Bertha snatched the name tag from over the newborn’s cradle. “I’m keeping him. Fuck you.”
“You can’t just take a baby!”
“You can’t starve a baby, either!”
Einrich, the twins, and a few Wood Wailers were standing outside of the orphanage, during the commotion. Bertha emerged from the double doors: Defiant, Resolved, and breastfeeding a random, deathly pale newborn--- DARING motherfuckers to stare.
“WHAT?”
Bertha challenged her husband, her boys, and several terrified Wood Wailers, adventurers, merchants, and residents... etc
Einrich just blinked a few times. The twins stared at each other and then to their father. “Uhm, let’s head home, love.”
“His name is Bertram Apo-something. If you EVER tell Bertram he’s adopted from this shithole I will bite your throat out.”
