Half String — A Fascination With Heights. 1996 : Independent.
We both worked in a record store but I was in the basement doing special orders and she was on the sales floor. She bought the last copy of Key Lime Pie that I had been waiting to get, but then she made me a tape dub with rare Unrest on the b-side. She loaned me a Half String cd and I got her a promo copy of Arches and Aisles. She wasn’t my type, but she was shockingly beautiful, and exotic (I’d never met anyone from Washington DC before) and we started spending a lot of time together. We snuck away from a work party and made love in a field under the stars. Then she told me her parents had arranged a marriage for her and she couldn’t get out of it, quit her job and I never saw her again. I think about her every time I hear this song (she was also a Mats fan)
Finally put together this cut of all extant video that myself and friend bcingyou had shot from their performance at this show, where if memory serves me correctly they reunited to play! Last song is an unreleased track from 1997.

I'd never heard of Tucson, Arizona band Half String. They seem to get lost in the "shoegaze" sound of the 1990s. And while they do have a Stone Roses, or My Bloody Valentine feel, those guitars can have such a clean chime at times. And the drone sounds like Yo La Tengo at times. In fact, at times I hear The Smiths (again, mostly guitars and melody). Listen to "...Departures" and you'll realize this is a band who certainly was influenced by the sound of the time, but also would just go in their own direction.
Captured Tracks did release a compilation of all their EPs back in 2012, but Independent Project Records (based in Bishop, California) released the 2 LP of Half String's only LP - "A Fascination With Heights" - last October.
