Patriot Half & Falmouth Sprint
Back on father's day weekend I raced the Patriot Half-Ironman. A little weird for it to be a "come-back" race two years in a row. After taking some time to reflect on things, I'm happy with how the race went. I went into the race with abut 4 weeks of actual "training" so I was a little unsure of exactly how it would go.
On race day I didn't have a plan beyond finishing, no realistic goal, no reach goal, just to survive and see where I was at. Coming out of the water I was dissapointed to see I had a really slow swim. Nothing to do at that point but get on the bike and go.
On the bike I felt pretty good, was on my "usual" 70.3 pace for the 1st loop, but decided to dial it down a little on the 2nd loop to be sure I could run off the bike. Leaving transition to start the run I noticed it had started getting a bit hotter out.
1st aid station at mile 1 of the run, I made a rookie mistake and got my cups of gatorade and water mixed up, dumped the gatorade over my head and drank the water! Whoops! Made me a sticky mess and caused my heart-monitor to go into a non-functioning state for the rest of the race. I gradually fell off pace-wise, a combination of the heat and just a lack of solid training coming off my surgery.
I ended up 5th in my age-group behind two guys going to Kona in October...I'll take it.

Last weekend I raced the hometown race, The Falmouth Sprint Triathlon. I love this race, ride my bike to T1, volunteer at packet pickup the night before, it's a good way to stay connected to the spirit of the sport. Going into this one my confidence had started to increase. Bike form improving, running paces and heart rate lining back up.
Race morning, we were greeted with a very overcast sky and an uncertain forecast, but you can only control what you can control, so put it out of the mind and get ready to race. I've raced in the Elite wave at this one the past couple years, I had considered moving back to my age-group wave this year but elected to stay in the front and chase the really fast folks.
At the start I felt good, swimming stroke for stroke with one of my faster teammates, but then I ended up taking the 2nd buoy wide and swam by myself for a bit, before turning to come in. Coming out of the water I was frustrated with my swim time, just not what I was looking for.
Grabbing the bike and running out to the mount line I noticed it was now raining, well more like drizzling, but my legs felt GREAT! Once I got going I quickly moved through the gears and started passing people. I ended up with a bike course PR and had moved up into the middle of the elite field coming into T2.
Starting the run I still felt great but realized I was running sub-6 minute pace, I slowly dialed it back to something more sustainable. I got passed once on the run and came into the finish just a few seconds off my Falmouth Tri run course PR. Overall, a successful day, 10th overall and 5th in the elite division (I would have won my age-group if I moved back into that wave)
A video I made using Google's Motion Stills app, from the iOS Live Photos my wife took during the race.
The local paper had nice write-up on the race and I got a mention in it. Check it out here.
Next up, Rev3 Maine Half! So excited to go back to this race again, feeling good and training is going great. Looking to beat my best time on this course and set a new 70.3 PR.
