Homeless au
Danny had only been half ghost for a few weeks and it was driving him crazy. He'd been in constant paranoia ever since he woke up from the accident on the cold, sticky floor of the basement.
He wished he could've pretended it had never happened but the portal's looming presence wouldn't let him forget the vivid moments when he was in the spot that didn't exist anymore. In its place was green. Acid, ever moving green. It looked like it could escape the hexagonal hole in the wall of their basement any moment.
That was the first thing he saw. The first thing as a...whatever he was. A freak. An abomination. A mistake of nature. A miracle...or a curse.
He was leaning into the latter one, but couldn't choose between that and 'scum'. Something that his parents had used so often to address ghosts. It almost felt like as petname. Now they might as well slap him in the face everytime they conversed about ghosts.
He sat tense at the breakfast table. Everything was going on as it normally did. But it was all under a new light. A new context. A different perspective. He was a different person this time.
He was hyperaware of every little thing in the house. Every ghost related device or event. If it was meant to hurt ghosts or not. It didn't matter. It was there and it was giving his anxiety coffee shots.
Just like him. He hoped the caffeine would do something. He didn't know what. It had to help. He'd convince himself it was helping. Unlike his untouched food. He wasn't that hungry anymore. Every once in a while he would get cramps and remind himself to eat two slices of bread. Water, on the other hand, he couldn't get enough of.
He clenched his cup as he thought of today. It was the fourth day off school. He was dreading it dearly. All those teens. The accumulated warmth choking him. The stress of tests, homework and even the level gaze of teachers who would look at him like a failure who didn't understand basic human knowledge and would never amount to his family's academic achievements before the teacher would explain to him what the lesson was about as if they were telling Danny why tables were supposed to be flat.
And the noise. The everpresent noise.
"Danny."
The boy looked up at his mother. Who frowned at him. "Better get to school. Wouldn't want you to be late."
Like last time. A ghost had appeared in Danny's path on his way to school. He had immediately recognized the feral aura it was giving off and knew it was trouble. He'd gotten to school one hour late with scrapes and a concussion.
Danny got up and grabbed his backpack, leaving. He could just hear his mom say to his dad in confusion. "Don't you think it's weird how quiet he can get lately? He barely reacted to me."
That was another thing. He seemed to have forgotten how to be human.
Because he wasn't one anymore.
----------------
Sam and Tucker were worried about him. These last few weeks he'd been avoiding them. He hadn't replied to any of their texts and when he did it was short and quick. He didn't want to hang out with them. And he looked different.
They didn't know how. There was something unsettling about him. As if he had changed but they couldn't figure out what.
This morning he looked ready to either pass out on the floor or let himself be swallowed by the void and the only thing he'd said to them was "My life sucks."
Middle of class right after lunch and the room felt like the air-conditioning had been turned on all night.
Everything was too loud. Danny glanced around but the only one talking was Mr. Lancer.
So much noise. He closed his eyes and hunched his shoulders but couldn't cancel anything out.
There was no- he couldn't keep- no escape- always trouble- danger everywhere- he had to- get out.
He stood up, walked around the chairs, opened the door and left.
