Okay so syncretic D&D religion has been in my head, and I’m sure I’ve already thrown this out there once or twice but, like-
Church of Pelor-lite is sending missionaries to convert the heathen and wipe out the monster, and they get an envoy from a nation of orcs and halforcs greeting them as brothers in the faith- that of the True Eye, source of light and life, even to those who are better suited in darkness.
Gruumsh and Luthic are no longer called by name- now the sun and the moon are father and mother goddess, and the ‘bishop’ is a high priestess with one blind eye, given to visions. They’ve hired scribes to help learn the language of the divine and share it.
Elaborately carved Inuit-style wooden sun goggles. Those who give up an eye to the divine cover with a sun-burst patch.
The leaders of the actual pseudo-Pelorian church now have a massive dilemma on their hands. Condemn it all as heathen blasphemy, and have a potentially unwinnable war on their hands? (They’re getting divine spells from somewhere, is it possible they’re ACTUALLY sincere?) Accept these strange, usually monstrous beings as true siblings in faith, while potentially offending their most central based of power?
I dunno, it just feels like there’s meat to dig into there. I like history, I like D&D style fantasy, I like mashing up big obnoxious conflicts as part of the backgrounds of worlds
